In a cross-business panel discussion, Johanna Alkberg reflects on how AI is becoming existential for the machining industry. To keep growing profitably and sustainably, we need to understand how AI can help us make better decisions, improve productivity and create more value for customers.

At this year’s DISCO Days, our Digital Shift Community event, leaders and representatives from across our Business Areas came together to discuss what AI looks like in practice.

One of the biggest misunderstandings about R&D is that innovation begins and ends with a good idea. Annika Kaar reminds us that it does not.

A good idea may open the door, but it is experimentation that determines whether it can go any further.

In the latest Meet Sandvik podcast, she describes R&D as a process of discussion, collaboration, testing and iteration. She talks about making an idea work is often harder than having it in the first place.

Meet the women taking control of the drill rig.
In eastern India, a group of young women from rural communities are training for work few women have historically been offered — operating surface drill rigs.

The year-long programme is the first in India to train women for this role. It takes them from classroom theory to simulator practice and, finally, to live operations at mine sites.

All 15 women in the first cohort have now received government drilling licenses and are employed. For many of them, the change is long-term. "My license got approved and I can professionally operate the machine. I can now take care of my own expenses independently and I don't have to ask anyone for help." For Astami Singh, the shift is both professional and personal.

In a region where mining has shaped local economies for generations, the women learning to operate such heavy machinery are changing what opportunities can look like.

"If women can operate huge aircrafts these days, this machine is nothing in comparison!"

Seema Rani Mahanta is one of 15 women from rural communities who have trained to become certified surface drill rig operators. The program moves from technical theory and simulator practice to live field operations. The initiative prepares them for government drilling licenses and full-time careers at KCCL mine sites.

When people are equipped with the right skills, they can change the demographics of an entire sector.

The Sandvik Alpha® 340 is becoming the new benchmark in top hammer drilling. The Wilhelm Haglund Medal 2026 award-winning solution is built around an asymmetric thread design that improves durability where failures usually start. So customers get more service life and fewer swaps.

It’s delivering 40–100% better performance than competitor systems and scaling into new hole sizes like Sandvik Alpha 360.
