You can’t restore your energy by simply stopping.

There’s a difference between recovery and restoration.

Recovery is taking the weekend off. Canceling plans. Finishing the hard project and finally getting some rest.

Restoration is what actually puts something back in the tank.

And here’s the important part: what restores you might not look like what restores someone else. There’s no universal “business owner self-care” checklist you need to add to your already-full calendar.

The question is: What actually gives YOU energy back?

Because the goal isn’t just to stop digging the hole deeper. It’s to start filling it back in.

🎧 Listen to the full episode #240 of Design for the Creative Mind for Michelle’s take on energy, restoration, and the simple energy audit every business owner should try.

You became an interior designer because you wanted to design.

Somewhere along the way, you also became the marketer, salesperson, project manager, financial manager, HR department, customer service rep, tech support… and professional fire extinguisher. 😂

And while there's no magic button that makes business ownership effortless, you don't have to figure it all out alone.

Michelle's programs are designed to meet you where you are:

✨ Want to DIY? Start with self-paced courses packed with templates, tools, and downloads you can put to work immediately.

✨ Want accountability and support? Get into the marketing membership for live calls, co-working, community, and ongoing guidance.

✨ Need strategic eyes on your specific business? Private advisory gives you more personalized support.

✨ Have a big project you need to tackle? A VIP Day gives you focused, dedicated time to get it done.

Whether your biggest challenge is getting leads, pricing profitably, creating better systems, improving your client experience, or simply getting out of the weeds, there's a way to get help.

Because the goal isn't to become better at doing everything yourself.

It's to build a design business that works without requiring you to be everything to everyone.

Ready to stop just keeping the business running and start actually leading it?

Let's build the business behind the design.

Your business doesn't need more hours from you. Promise.

It might need smoother systems.
It might need better pricing.
It might need consistent marketing. (sorry to tell you)
It might need clearer team responsibilities.

And it might need you to stop being the person who has to approve, answer, fix, and decide everything. (ouch!)

But adding another three hours to your workday?

Probably not, Babe.

Because there's a point where working harder stops being the solution.

The goal of growing an interior design firm isn't to become better at doing everything.

It's to build a business that doesn't require you to do everything.

That's CEO work.

If that makes you uncomfortable, let's talk.

The wrong client doesn’t just take your time.

They can take your confidence, your creative energy, and your ability to enjoy the work you’ve worked so hard to create.

You know the feeling: the project is coming together beautifully, but instead of enjoying the moment, you’re already bracing for the client’s reaction.

That’s an energy tax—and you pay it whether or not they ever actually push back.

The ugly truth is that a client who looks fine on paper can still be a costly mismatch.

Sometimes the best business decision isn’t figuring out how to manage a difficult client better. It’s getting better at recognizing the wrong fit before you ever start the project.

Not all of our business advice is serious. 😉

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself and your business is the simplest thing.

Like taking a 15-minute nap.

Seriously.

In this episode of Design for the Creative Mind, we talked about how Robin has mastered the art of knowing when he needs a quick reset—and how Michelle started taking the same approach.

Because sometimes you don't need another productivity hack, another system, or another thing on your to-do list.

You just need to stop. Close your eyes. Take 15 minutes. And come back as a whole new person.

And honestly? That's pretty good business advice too.

You started your interior design firm because you love design.

You pictured beautiful spaces, creative freedom, and getting paid to bring your ideas to life.

You did not picture:

47 emails before breakfast
A client calling about something that could absolutely wait
Tracking down a missing shipment
Hunting for an invoice
Fixing the thing your software suddenly decided to do
Putting out a fire you didn't even know existed
…and somehow being the person everyone needs an answer from.

Oh, and you still need to market the business.
And sell the next project.
And look at the numbers.
And lead your team.
And maybe—just maybe—design something. 😂

Welcome to being the CEO of a design firm.

The goal isn't to eliminate all the non-design work. That's part of owning a business.

The goal is to build systems, processes, and a team that keep you from being the answer to absolutely everything.

Because if you're spending all your time running the work, when do you get to actually lead the business?

Tell me: what's the most unexpected "CEO job" you've found yourself doing as a designer? 👇

Not every podcast episode needs to be about pricing, sales, marketing, or growing your business.

Sometimes, you just need a conversation that reminds you why we do what we do. ❤️

This episode with the Design Besties is one of those.

Nikki, Lori, Robin, and Whitney came together through the design industry, became fast friends, and turned that friendship into something bigger than any of their individual businesses: a mission to create beautiful, restorative spaces for teachers.

And honestly? I loved this conversation because it wasn't about business advice.

It was about friendship. Community. Collaboration. Purpose. Generosity. And finding the people who make you better.

It's about leaving the ego at the door, making room at the table, and using the gifts you already have to make a difference.

This one has a little more heart than most. And I think we all need that sometimes. ❤️

If every question, decision, problem, and approval has to come through you… you might not just be the CEO.

You might be the bottleneck. 👀 (whoops)

And before you get defensive—this doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong.

It usually means you've built a business where you have become the system.

Your team needs your answer before they can move forward.
Your clients expect you to respond to everything.
You’re the one who knows where everything is.
And when something goes wrong, everyone knows exactly who to call.

Being needed feels good.

But if your business can't move without you, it can't really grow beyond you either.

The goal isn't to remove yourself from your business completely. It's to build the systems, processes, expectations, and team structure that allow you to spend more time leading the business instead of constantly keeping it moving.

So here's the uncomfortable question:

How many things in your business still require YOU simply because you've never built another way?

That might be your next CEO project.

Burnout doesn’t always look like burnout.

Sometimes you’re still showing up for site visits.
Still answering emails.
Still getting the work done.

But your patience is gone. Your fuse is shorter. Little things that normally wouldn’t bother you suddenly feel HUGE. (You know I keep it real around here.)

And the hardest part? The people closest to you often feel it first.

Your husband.
Your kids.
Your dog.
Your friends.

When you’re depleted, that buffer between “this is annoying” and “I’m about to lose it” gets really, really small.

And as business owners, we can be so good at convincing ourselves that we’re fine because we’re still functioning.

But functioning isn’t the same as thriving.

If this feels a little too familiar, maybe it’s time to stop asking, “How much more can I get done?” and start asking, “What do I need to function like myself again?”

You can have a full calendar, a packed inbox, and more projects than you can handle—and still feel like your business isn't actually moving forward.

Because busy and growing aren't the same thing.

When you're spending every day answering emails, solving project problems, chasing vendors, and putting out fires, you're working in your business.

But who's working on it? (Yes, I am talking to you!)

We just broke down the five CEO responsibilities every interior design firm owner needs to protect time for—including lead generation, financial oversight, systems, team development, and strategic planning.

If you've been feeling busy but stuck, this one's for you.
