We are still under a burn ban. Please no outside burning!

This afternoon, with temperatures hovering around 104 degrees, the Alexander Fire Department was dispatched to a residential fire on Tulip Drive.

Chief and Engine 37, staffed with a three-person crew, arrived to find heavy fire conditions involving a small shed and surrounding yard, with approximately 40 feet of fence burning. The intense heat from the fire was also threatening two nearby homes, causing siding to melt and fire to extend beneath portions of the structures.

E-37 began an aggressive attack while prioritizing exposure protection and stopping the spread of fire to the neighboring residences.

As Auto and Mutual -aid departments arrived, additional crews were assigned to assist with fire suppression, exposure protection, overhaul, and checking for extension under the homes.

With temperatures near 104 degrees, the extreme heat took a toll on firefighters operating on scene.

Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of our mutual-aid partnerships and the willingness of neighboring departments and agencies to respond when additional resources are needed.

PUBLIC STATEMENT

Multi-Department Assist — Alexander Road Railroad Crossing

Late yesterday afternoon, the Alexander Police Chief observed a juvenile stumble across the railroad tracks near the Alexander Road crossing, several hundred yards away, shortly after a train had traveled through the area.

Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the individual’s safety, the Alexander Police and Fire Departments immediately began investigating.

The Police Chief and Fire Chief initiated a search along the railroad tracks while additional personnel checked the surrounding area and went door-to-door attempting to determine the identity and location of the individual.

With extremely high temperatures still present and the possibility that someone could be injured or in distress, a command post was established and additional resources were requested. At the request of the Police Chief, the Fire Chief assumed incident command, with both departments continuing to work closely together throughout the operation.

The Pulaski County Office of Emergency Management responded with drone capabilities to begin an immediate aerial search. The Arkansas State Police provided helicopter support, and a Little Rock Police Department K-9 team was requested to assist with tracking.

Numerous additional agencies responded with personnel, UTVs/side-by-sides, and other resources. As crews arrived, Incident Command assigned teams to search on foot and by UTV in areas that could not be effectively viewed by the drone or helicopter.

After several hours of an extensive coordinated search, responders were unable to locate an injured or missing individual. Additionally, no area hospitals reported receiving anyone matching the circumstances of the incident by personal vehicle.

We want our community to understand that this was treated as a serious public safety matter. Based on what was directly observed, we believed it was necessary to use the resources available to us to make every reasonable effort to ensure the individual seen on the railroad tracks was safe.

More than 40 responders participated in this multi-agency operation. We sincerely thank the following agencies and organizations for responding to assist our city and for the personnel, equipment, and resources they provided:

Please be advised. For the area in our city that is within Pulaski County, we are now under a burn ban, per county judge.

We expect Saline County to follow this soon as we continue with extremely high temperatures.
