PROpel's current quarterly theme is Work / Life Balance, and today, we've got a podcast recommendation on that theme from PROpel Committee Member Gabe Offermann. πŸŽ™οΈ

Gabe suggests listening to The Investor's Podcast Network episode "RWH068, How to Be Better in Work & Life with David Epstein." From Gabe:

"William Green sits down with David Epstein to talk about his new book: 'Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better.' Epstein's previous book 'Range' made the case that generalists β€” people with broad skills across multiple disciplines β€” are undervalued in a world obsessed with specialization. That one resonated with me personally as someone who has spent a career being the utility player.

'Inside the Box' adds the next layer. Once you know your range, the right constraints actually sharpen your focus and produce your best work. Total freedom can be paralyzing. Limitations force better thinking.

Together, the two books tell a pretty complete story. Find your range. Then use constraints to go deep.

What I love about this podcast is that they share the resources their subjects learned from β€” so you can go deeper yourself. Worth a listen."

***An important schedule update***

Due to inclement weather, our Connect@ scheduled for tonight at Small Batch Glass Company has been postponed to Thursday, June 4. Small Batch Glass is a fantastic venue but has a relatively small indoor space; we're hoping that next week's weather will better accommodate an outdoor networking event. It'll still take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Thanks for your understanding β€” we hope to see you next week!

If you've ever felt yourself burning out at work 😩, then this message from last week's GROW series speaker will definitely resonate.

Kyra Cavanaugh, Founder of 15Be and certified meditation / healing guide, spoke to PROpel AVL members about how to deal with uncertainty and stress β€” whether it's coming from your professional or personal life. We spoke to her specifically about the impact that burnout can have on working professionals, as well as the best first steps a person can do to addressing and overcoming it.

Our next Build Community@ event on May 21 is with Babies Need Bottoms, a nonprofit on a mission to improve the lives of babies, toddlers and parents in Western North Carolina.

We'll help out at their warehouse by preparing diaper bundles and assisting with any other projects that we can. It'll be a fantastic opportunity to make a real impact on families in WNC, so we hope you'll join us β€” and bring some friends and co-workers along, too!

Asher Holman, the owner and operator over at Small Batch Glass Company, creates timeless pieces of art. And as this video demonstrates, those of us at PROpel AVL...do not. 🀣

That's why we'll stick to doing what we do best during our next Connect@ event at Small Batch Glass on May 26: Bringing the young professional community of Asheville together for some good times and networking. Expect some light refreshments, fun conversation and β€” most exciting of all β€” a free glassblowing demonstration from Asher himself. It'll be a fun time in a truly phenomenal environment, so we hope to see you there!

πŸŽ‰ Welcome to a new era of PROpel AVL πŸŽ‰

Starting this month, we're changing our approach to PROpel AVL's social media feeds and newsletter. The goal? To deliver more meaningful content to you, our readers and viewers. The change? Themed quarters.

And, sure, while the term "themed quarters" may not have immediately caused you to jump for joy, trust us: This is a thrilling announcement. Every 3 months, PROpel AVL will select a new theme that'll become our focus for that quarter. You can expect:

β€’ An increased frequency of social posts related to our quarterly theme, including advice and reflections from PROpel members, Chamber staff and Asheville area professionals πŸ™Œ
β€’ Write ups in the newsletter that offer advice to young professionals focused on a given theme ✍️
β€’ Videos on the PROpel social channels that discuss the topic of the quarter. Some will be serious πŸ€” and some will be silly πŸ™ƒ

The first themed quarter will run from May-July, and the focus is (you may have guessed this one already...) Work / Life Balance β€” something we know young professionals have lots (and lots) of questions about. So we hope you keep your eyes on our social feeds and newsletter in the coming months.

It's an exciting time for PROpel AVL, so please let us know in the comments what types of content, events or themes you'd like to see going forward!

This May, our Connect@ networking series will blow you away...because we're heading to a glassblowing studio! πŸ₯‚

On Tuesday, May 26, we'll meet at Small Batch Glass Company to enjoy some food and drinks while doing some casual networking β€” and a whole lot of impressed gawking at the artistry on display. You'll be able to explore the fantastic space all while catching up with PROpel members and meeting other young professionals. You can learn more and register here: https://bit.ly/4tV3G85

Thanks to Western Carolina University and First Bank for sponsoring Connect@. We'll see y'all there!

βœ‹ Raise your hand if you're...

1) Considering a job or career change.
2) Uncertain about what your future holds.
3) Worried that you might be burned out.

If any of those sound familiar, then our next GROW Series speaker Kyra Cavanaugh can offer some valuable insights and strategies about remaining grounded and calm both at work and at home. She's a wellbeing consultant and energy coach with 20+ years of experience, and she specializes in helping people navigate stressful situations and times of uncertainty or change.

Last weekend's Build Community@ was a special oneπŸŒ²πŸ’•

PROpel AVL members joined forces with over 100 volunteers for The Pisgah Conservancy's Pisgah Project Day. Paths were cleared. Trees were trimmed. Fences were mended. The mission to protect and maintain WNC's incredible natural resources is a critical one, and we were honored that PROpel could play a part in this fantastic event.

And a special thanks to Gabe for sharing some photos, too!
