This Black History Month, MarketSource honors the legacy of the Bailey‑Johnson School, a cornerstone of Black education and community in North Fulton County, Georgia.

Opened in 1950 as the Alpharetta Colored School, Bailey‑Johnson was the first and only public school in North Fulton County to provide Black students access to a full high school education during segregation. Before its opening, many Black students were forced to travel long distances—or were unable to continue their education beyond the 7th grade.

In 1953, the school was renamed to honor George Bailey and Warren Johnson, two men whose leadership helped make the school possible. George Bailey, a local landowner, donated the land for the school, while Warren Johnson, a formerly enslaved man and respected community leader, strongly advocated for education as a pathway to opportunity and empowerment.

More than a school, Bailey‑Johnson served as a safe haven, cultural anchor, and source of pride for Black families across North Fulton County. When the school closed in 1967, it marked the end of segregated public education in the region.

As we reflect during Black History Month, we recognize that honoring Black history also means preserving local stories, uplifting community legacies, and committing to equity beyond February.

Atlanta was the heart of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s impact—a place where his leadership, organizing and voice helped shape the Civil Rights Movement. From his work at Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to his connection to Georgia HBCUs, Atlanta became a catalyst for national and global change rooted in justice and dignity.

Being headquartered in Georgia makes this day especially meaningful for MarketSource. At MarketSource, we reflect on Dr. King’s call to service, courage and collective responsibility. His vision reminds us that progress happens when we listen, lead with empathy and take action—together.
