How do you start in private service when you have never worked in a private home?

My own career began in four- and five-star hotels before taking me aboard luxury cruise ships. This was back in the 1980s, when cruising was a very different experience and traditional service standards were exceptionally high.

Working aboard those ships quickly taught me that great service doesn't wait for the perfect moment.

You serve different guests, personalities, and preferences every day, often juggling multiple requests at once. You learn to pay attention, anticipate needs, adapt quickly, and still make every interaction feel personal.

Those lessons stayed with me long after I left the ships. Regardless of where you work, people remember how you made them feel, and they remember when they felt genuinely looked after.

When I speak with candidates hoping to enter private service, I encourage them to gain experience with establishments known for luxury hospitality, such as The Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, or properties associated with Relais & Châteaux.

Your résumé may not yet include a private household, but a prospective employer may recognize the hotel, resort, or cruise line where you trained. They understand the standards associated with that name and know that skills such as discretion, anticipation, presentation, consistency, and personalized service can translate beautifully into a private home.
