Successful people and entrepreneurs frequently provide the mortar that binds our communities. They commonly return the benefits of their good fortune by serving on non-profit boards and supporting the organizations financially, funding local arts and athletics, and very importantly by creating jobs where they grew up and live. State & municipal governments are very shortsighted when they create tax environments where these individuals are encouraged to relocate to protect their estates. A recent article by the WSJ highlighted how much Dolly Parton had done for the state of Tennessee and the causes she believed in (https://www.wsj.com/business/dolly-parton-business-rights-dollywood-599aae2b). Some examples from the article include a Tennessee government study which concluded that Dollywood had created about 23,000 jobs and had a positive economic impact of $1.8 billion and her creation of an Imagination Library program to provide children under the age of 5 with free books on a monthly basis. As of 2021, this program had provided kids with over 150 million books. The state of Washington has historically been a robust garden where companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Costco, and Boeing were born and thrived. The fertile ground for entrepreneurship existed because the state did not have a state income tax or capital gains tax. Damage has already been done to the area by poor public policy. It can be reversed. It starts with "We the People" saying we like our garden and don't want to scare away our golden egg laying hens. We want the companies of tomorrow to be born in Washington today.

IBA has successfully facilitated sales of manufacturers, distributors, and retail establishments selling alcohol throughout its history. It is an area of personal interest and activity as a M&A intermediary. I have also been known to enjoy a good pilsner, zinfandel, and quality bourbon. IBA is blessed to operate in Washington & Oregon which has numerous companies that compete domestically & internationally against the best related to the production of medal winning beers, wines, and spirits. Thought I would share an interesting article from my reading stack this morning with anyone else in my network who is interested in this industry segment: https://www.scotusblog.com/2026/08/alcohol-at-the-supreme-court/ If you are interested in selling an alcohol manufacturing, distribution, or retail business, IBA would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to learn about your company, exit strategy objectives, and provide an overview of our client services. All conversations with IBA are held in strict confidence.

(Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)During the 2025-26 term, the justices pondered the Founding Fathers’ drinking habits as they considered a law barring habitual drug users from possessing guns. In the term ahead, they may return to the topic of alcohol in early America if ...

One of the challenges with being a business broker is that frequently tax laws, lending environments, and legal issues impacting entrepreneurs change. The best of the best business brokerage firms stay current on the issues relevant to the purchase & sale of privately held companies and family businesses so they can act as trusted guides for their clients. A hot topic in the SBA lending world presently is the new Quality of Earnings report requirement for all transactions in value for $3 million or more. IBA facilitates a significant number of transactions annually with enterprise values of $1 – 10 million, so this is a world we live in daily. Relevant to that issue here is an article recently published by one of our CPA firm collaborative partners: https://www.claconnect.com/en/resources/blogs/private-equity/the-sba-now-requires-a-quality-of-earnings-on-larger-acquisition-loans The best decisions are made from a foundation of knowledge. IBA welcomes the opportunity to meet with business owners to help them begin the strategic planning process for future sale. All conversations with IBA are held in strict confidence. IBA only seeks compensation from our clients upon project completion.

Under the SBA’s newly issued standard operating procedure, an independent QoE becomes mandatory for larger change-of-ownership loans.

IBA was referenced this week in the online publication, Peekwire (https://peekwire.com/article/the-first-mistake-most-owners-make-when-selling-their-business). We only seek payment for our services upon successfully completion of a transaction (https://ibainc.com/blog/gregory-kovsky/why-a-business-owner-should-select-a-business-sale-intermediary-who-is-only-paid-a-success-fee/) If you are thinking about selling a privately held company or family business in the Pacific Northwest, we would welcome the opportunity to interview for a position on your transaction team.

Finance has always fascinated me. It was my undergraduate major at the University of Texas. It is a known fact that to make money you need money. United States government supported financing programs for its citizens are unique in the world. They enable us to do many things we normally could not do from obtain education to acquire businesses. Early in life, I worked as a financial aid officer and collected delinquent student loans for Sallie Mae, so my knowledge of those programs is dated, but deep. The last 32 years, I have become fluent in the policies, procedures, and regulations associated with Small Business Administration backed loans. That world is in the process of changing with HUGE modifications coming this autumn to the program. As with any change, there will be good, bad, and indifferent. On a positive front, it appears that one modification highlighted in a recent Forbes article (https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnschroyer/2026/08/20/sba-rule-change-makes-110000-more-businesses-eligible-for-benefits/) will enable M&A to occur with SBA loans for companies in sectors commonly supported by IBA (Manufacturing, Aerospace, Marine, Construction, Transportation, Etc.) as a business purchase & sale intermediary firm involving larger companies seeking to grow vertically and horizontally. IBA invests significant time, energy, and resources in keeping our M&A intermediary team up to date on financing opportunities available in the marketplace. If you are selling a business, can you afford to hire a business broker who cannot source the money to allow you to exit with a very high percentage of cash. IBA is compensated 100% on performance. You do not pay us unless we, to quote Jerry Maguire "Show You the Money". All conversations with IBA are held in strict confidence.
