Southeastern Arizona pecan crop looks VERY good this season. Branches twisting over with a large crop that is entering the water stage. Minimal August drop over past years. Still a long way to go, but setting up to be a great crop!

Starting out the third graze this summer on #2 at our ranch The Banderilla, the Green Cover blend of brown top, pearl, and foxtail millet with grazing corn into our alfalfa stand base is highly productive. Zero fertilizer this season. Highly productive for our cow calf and stocker operations. This field had cereal rye, wheat, barley and annual ryegrass this past winter. No tillage, no fertilizer, just cows and we’re using less water.

Growing Shoshone sainfoin on top of my Johnson-Su Bioreactor.

I built this reactor using aged shredded pecan limbs and bark mixed with wine grape pomace. It was quick to react and move through the thermophilic stage and has now been in a long mesophilic stage.

From the microscopy sessions I’ve done so far, this reactor is already highly biologically active and showing a lot of the right kinds of amoebae. I’m growing the sainfoin directly on top to see if I can help push the biology even further and increase the fungal diversity as the root system develops.

Right now I’m watching the temperature and waiting for it to drop a little more before I add worms.

I’m really interested to see how the biology continues to develop and what effect growing sainfoin on top of the reactor has on the fungal community.

Conducted a soil microscopy session on one of my grower's vineyard soils this morning. Great to see, for the first time, a spectacular septated fungal hyphae. Encouraging to see soil health increasing in the arid southwest vineyards. Hard work pays off!!

Evaluating soil health is a key part of all cropping systems. Arizona Ag Solutions is now sampling soil for Haney soil tests and conducting in house soil microscopy sessions to visually determine soil health aspects.

The fall and early winter is a great time to examine soil health and take steps toward improving soil health and structure.
