Off-brand devices miss the mark on safety components and are prone to poor workmanship and inferior quality. But what are they missing entirely? What should be means of concern?

❌ Missing components for EMI filtering, self-ground feature, surge protection, safety capacitors and overcurrent protection.
❌ Lack of safety fuse on electrical circuit and/or pierced wire insulation on internal circuitry.
❌ Screw retainers on the mounting strap and/or terminal screws capable of being removed.
❌ Internal power supply rated for less output than advertised on packaging.

Electrical Safety Month is a good reminder for contractors and installers to stick with what’s safe and what’s up to code.

When you’re selecting receptacles, go with tamper-resistant (TR) devices. They’re code-compliant and help add protection in residential spaces.

Also, keep an eye out for questionable or off-brand products. Signs of trouble include:
🚩 Burn marks or charring
🚩 Poor insulation
🚩 Loose spacing or cheap construction
🚩 Non-UL-listed components

If something doesn't look, or even smell, right -- trust your gut.
