One of the biggest mistakes I see leaders make?

They confuse the stretch zone with the panic zone.

Growth does require discomfort.
But overwhelming people is not the same thing as developing them.

I know this personally.

Early in my career, we weren’t gently encouraged out of our comfort zones…
we were thrown out of them.

And while pressure can create short bursts of performance, chronic stress changes people.

Creativity drops.
Connection drops.
People move into survival mode instead of possibility.

That’s why emotional intelligence matters so much in leadership.

As leaders, we have to ask:
👉 Are we helping people stretch?
Or unintentionally pushing them into panic?

Because the way people feel at work directly impacts how they think, collaborate, innovate, and perform.

That’s why I believe happiness is a competitive advantage.

I still remember a moment early in my career that changed the way I lead forever.

Someone sent me a message that frustrated me.
Nothing dramatic… but enough to trigger that familiar rush to respond quickly.

I started typing immediately.

But I paused.

Just for a second.

And in that small space… something shifted.

I asked myself:
“What do I want this moment to create?”

Not what do I want to say.
But what do I want to create.

That pause changed everything.

Because I realized I had two choices:
React from emotion… or respond with intention.

And those two choices rarely lead to the same outcome.

Over time, I started noticing something important:

The quality of my leadership wasn’t defined in big speeches or big decisions…
It was defined in these small, almost invisible moments.

A pause before replying.
A breath before reacting.
A question before assuming.

That’s where trust is built.
That’s where tone is set.
That’s where leadership becomes felt—not just heard.

It sounds simple.

And it is.

But it’s not always easy in real time.

I almost forgot to post today’s video… and honestly, that feels very human right now. 😊
