I’ve always loved thinking about emotion as E-Motion — energy in motion.
I wrote about this idea years ago, and I still find myself coming back to it.
Because our emotions don’t just happen to us.
They move us.
They influence what we notice, how we interpret a situation, and what we do next.
And I’ve learned that one of the most powerful things I can do—especially as a leader—is pause long enough to ask:
ā€œWhat is this emotion moving me toward?ā€
That little pause can be the difference between reacting and responding.
Between escalating a situation and creating connection.
Between letting the emotion lead… and choosing how I want to lead.
I certainly haven’t mastered this. šŸ˜‰ But after decades of working with leaders and teams, I’ve become convinced that awareness is where intentional leadership begins.

That’s why I’m going deeper into emotional intelligence in my upcoming FREE live Masterclass:

What are you communicating before you say a single word? šŸ‘€

I’ve learned that as leaders, we’re always broadcasting something.

Our energy.
Our tone.
Our facial expressions.
Our impatience.
Our confidence.
Our stress.

And our teams are paying attention—even when we think they aren't.

I’ve certainly had moments when I walked into a room thinking I was communicating one thing… only to realize my emotions were broadcasting something completely different.

That realization changed the way I lead.

Because Emotional Intelligence isn't about never feeling frustrated, anxious, or overwhelmed.

It's about noticing what you're feeling before it starts running the show.

That little pause between feeling and reacting can change everything. 🌱

So today, I'm asking you:

What are YOU broadcasting?

šŸŽ™ļø That's exactly what I'll be exploring in my FREE LIVE Masterclass:

What Are You Broadcasting?
Emotional Intelligence: The Skill That Changes Everything

I'll show you how to become more aware of the emotional signals you're sending, respond more intentionally, and create the kind of emotional climate where people can flourish.

🌱 Motivational Monday: What If You Looked at It Differently?

**What if changing the way you look at happiness could change the way you experience it?** šŸ¤”

I’m taking a little trip back to one of my favorite events, **Happiness From the Inside Out**.

I remember sharing something that has stayed with me:

**Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at begin to change.**

That isn't just a nice motivational idea.

It has shaped so much of how I think about happiness, leadership, and the way we move through the world.

For a long time, I thought happiness was simply a state of mind.

I've learned to see it differently.

Our thoughts and emotions create real physical responses in our bodies. When we experience calm and positive emotions, our bodies respond differently than when we're living in a constant state of stress and threat.

And that matters.

Because what we repeatedly think about, focus on, and practice can influence how we show up.

Especially as leaders.

I've worked with leaders for more than 36 years, and I've seen how easy it is to get stuck looking at the same problem from the same angle.

Sometimes the breakthrough doesn't come from working harder.

It comes from **seeing differently.** šŸ‘€

That's one of the reasons I created **Rent My Brainā„¢**.

I don't promise to walk in with all the answers.

I bring questions.

Perspective.

Experience.

And a willingness to challenge the way you're looking at the challenge in front of you. 🧠

Because sometimes a fresh perspective is enough to reveal a possibility that was there all along.

šŸ’¬ **What is one situation in your life or leadership that might look different if you changed the way you looked at it?**

🧠 If you're circling a leadership challenge, decision, or opportunity and need another perspective, I'd love to invite you to **Rent My Brainā„¢**.

šŸ‘‰ **Check the links in the bio for the details.**

Let's start this Monday by looking at something differently. ✨

Last night I was in my happy place! I’m a July baby, and somehow astrologically that makes me a ā€œmoon childā€.

I take that to heart.

I feel I have a special connection with Grandmother Moon. My favorite place to talk to her is at the beach!

Last night I got out there, and what had been a stormy day ended up as a crystal clear night.

What a gift - I got to see the moon rise seemingly out of the ocean, and then slowly into the sky.

It’s always a thrill.
It’s like beach church!

I take all the things I’ve been wishing for and hoping for and give them to Grandmother.

I came to FL close to 30 years ago to write a book. I somehow never went back home. The book I came to write never did get written, but the one I did write, ā€œWinning at Customer Retention - 101 Ways to Keep ā€˜em Happy, Keep ā€˜em Loyal and Keep ā€˜em Coming Back. Was written when I lived in the beach.

Thus began my monthly ritual of howling at the moon. And yes, I do howl.

šŸ”™ Flashback Friday: A Little Wisdom From My Museletter

Have you ever had one of those moments when you suddenly thought, ā€œWait… how did I get here?ā€ šŸ¤”

Today, I’m taking a little trip back through one of my Museletters—because sometimes something I wrote years ago hits differently when I read it again.

I remember writing about those moments when life gives us a little nudge—or sometimes a much bigger one—and asks us to pay attention.

At the time, I was thinking about what happens when we move through life on autopilot.

We work.
We solve.
We take care of everyone.
We keep moving.

And then something happens that makes us stop and think:

Is this really where I want to be?

I’ve learned that those moments of disruption can actually be invitations.

An invitation to pause.
To get curious.
To ask a better question.
To see something we may have been too close to notice. 🌱

Looking back at this Museletter now, I’m reminded how often the answers we’re looking for begin with a better question.

And that’s something I still believe deeply in my work with leaders today.

After 36+ years alongside CEOs, executives, and teams, I don't always walk into a conversation with the answer.

I often walk in with questions that help people see differently. 🧠

That's also the thinking behind Rent My Brainā„¢.

If you're circling a leadership challenge, decision, opportunity, or people problem and can't quite see your way through it, sometimes another perspective is exactly what you need.

šŸ’¬ Have you ever looked back at something you wrote, experienced, or believed years ago—and realized it still had something to teach you?

From My Masterclass: Happiness From The Inside Out.

What if your happiness isn’t determined mostly by your circumstances? šŸ¤”

This idea resonates with me because it’s something I had to learn the hard way:

I can’t control what happens to me.

But I have more influence over what I think, feel, and do than I realize. 🌱

Research suggests that around 50% of our happiness is influenced by genetics, about 10% by circumstances, and a significant portion is within our voluntary control.

That doesn't mean we can just "choose happiness."

Life happens.

Difficult things happen.

And pretending otherwise isn't positive leadership.

But something is empowering about recognizing that our circumstances aren't the whole story.

We can practice new habits.

We can shift our attention.

We can be more intentional about the thoughts we reinforce and the actions we take.

I've seen this transformation in myself, and also in the leaders I've worked with for more than 36 years.

Sometimes, the most important shift isn't changing everything around us.

It's learning to see what is within our influence. šŸ’›

And that same principle applies to leadership.

When we stop spending all our energy trying to control what we can't control, we create more room for thoughtful decisions, better relationships, and meaningful action.

That's where growth begins.

šŸ’¬ What is one thing within your control today that could positively change how you feel or lead?

🧠 If you're facing a leadership challenge and need a fresh perspective, I'd love to invite you to Rent My Brain™—a focused 90-minute session where we put two brains on your toughest question.

What if gratitude isn't just about appreciating what you have… but about seeing where you’re going next? 🌱

This quote from Melody Beattie really makes me pause:

ā€œGratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.ā€

I’ve learned that gratitude can be much more powerful than we sometimes give it credit for.

When I look back on my own journey, I can see lessons I didn't recognize while I was living through them.

Some were joyful.
Some were difficult.
And some only made sense much later.

But gratitude helps me look at all of it differently.

I can appreciate where I've been.
I can become more present to where I am.

And I can move forward with greater clarity about where I want to go. šŸ’›

I think the same is true in leadership.

Gratitude isn't simply saying "thank you."

It's noticing the people who helped you get here.
Recognizing what your challenges taught you.
And appreciating what's working instead of constantly focusing on what's missing.

That shift in perspective can change how we lead, make decisions, and create culture.

Thank you, Melody, for this beautiful reminder. 🌿

Recap From My Masterclass: Happiness From The Inside Out.

Have you ever noticed how one negative moment can stay with you all day… while five good things barely register? šŸ¤”
I talk about this often because understanding our brains can change how we understand ourselves—and how we lead.
Negative emotions tend to stick like Velcro. šŸŖ
A critical email.
A difficult conversation.
Something that went wrong in a meeting.
Our brains are wired to notice potential threats because, first and foremost, the brain is trying to keep us safe.
Positive experiences can be easier to overlook.
A compliment comes in… and we move on.
A great conversation happens… and five minutes later we're worrying about the next problem.
I've caught myself doing this, too.
That's why we have to be intentional about noticing the good.
✨ Savor it.
✨ Talk about it.
✨ Celebrate it.
✨ Create more moments worth remembering.
This is one reason I'm so passionate about positive leadership.
I'm not suggesting leaders should make everyone happy all the time. That's unrealistic.
But we can pay attention to the emotional environment we're creating.
Because what we repeatedly reinforce becomes part of the culture. 🌱
That's not toxic positivity.
It's understanding how humans work.
And sometimes, creating a better environment starts with stepping back and seeing what we've stopped seeing.

That's a big part of what I do through Rent My Brain™—helping leaders ask better questions, uncover blind spots, and gain a fresh perspective on the challenges they're facing. Click the link in the bio.

When was the last time you truly thanked someone on your team?

Not just a quick ā€œthanksā€ā€¦
But a meaningful, specific acknowledgment.
Because here’s what I know:
šŸ‘‰ People don’t just want to be paid.
šŸ‘‰ They want to be appreciated.

Gratitude builds connection.
Connection builds loyalty.
Loyalty builds great organizations.

And it doesn’t have to be complicated:
āœ” Be specific
āœ” Be sincere
āœ” Be consistent

Those small moments of recognition?

They create lasting impact.
✨ Tag someone you appreciate today — and tell them why šŸ‘‡

Who's helping YOU think? šŸ¤”
Leadership can be lonely in a very particular way.
Everyone is looking to you for answers.
But that doesn't mean you should have to figure everything out alone.
After 36+ years working with CEOs, executives, and leadership teams, I've learned that sometimes the most valuable thing I can offer isn't an answer.
It's a question.
A different perspective.
A challenge to an assumption.
A connection between two things you hadn't put together before.
That's the idea behind Rent My Brainā„¢.
🧠 90 minutes. Two brains. Fresh perspective.
Bring me the problem you've been carrying around for too long.
Let's think it through together.
