There are three methods of auditing
and reviewing a Motor Carrier enacted by The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA):
#1 SAFETY AUDIT
New carriers registering for USDOT identification numbers are subject to this audit, which will usually occur within the first 18 months of operation.
#2 COMPLIANCE REVIEWS
These are typically performed on motor carriers with questionable safety fitness or practices. This can be a variety of contributing factors, including but not limited to: High accident rates, high vehicle or driver out of service rates, past poor performance, non-frivolous complaints logged against the company. Auditors will take an in-depth look at the carrier’s safety performance and compliance with both the FMCSR’s and hazmat regulations (HMR’s). According to FMCSA, about 30% of these reviews require enforcement actions against the motor carrier.
#3 ROADSIDE INSPECTIONS
These are administered at weigh stations, with portable scales, or at other roadside locations. Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Inspection standards are used to determine whether the inspection is passed or failed. Failing to comply with state and federal regulations can cost you thousands of dollars and can even cost you your company. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact one of our compliance experts today to ensure that you are on the right side of DOT and FMCSA laws and regulations.
