An estate cleanout has a deadline, but a lifetime of memories doesn't. 🤔

Until suddenly...it does. Three weeks. Forty boxes. A house that needs to be emptied. 📦 How do we even do this?

Believe it or not, a hard drive full of photos can become our new box in the attic! 💻 📸 They may be scanned, but are they actually organized?

Imagine opening your hard drive and seeing:

How in the world do you find anything? 😅 Digitizing your photos is a great first step, but there is still more to do!

See, digitized and organized aren't the same thing. Eight thousand scans sitting in one folder are still pretty hard to enjoy. The magic happens when we turn those scans into a collection that's organized, accessible, and easy to navigate!

Photos can be:
📸 Named
📅 Dated
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Grouped by people or events
🔎 Searchable
🗂️ Organized into a system that makes sense
❤️ Easy to browse and share

Now instead of wondering, “Where did that picture go?” you know exactly where it is. That can make all the difference!

I don't put everything on a hard drive and hand it back to you. I want to create a digital collection that makes you want to open it, look through it, share it, and tell the stories all over again! Or, at the very least, if you need to find something, you can very easily access it quickly.

You shouldn't have to organize your photos before hiring someone to organize your photos! 📦 📸

It sounds obvious, right?! And yet, that's exactly what a lot of people think they have to do first! You look at the boxes and think, “I need to get these under control before I can ask someone to help me.” So...you tell yourself you'll sort them this weekend. Then next weekend. Then maybe when things calm down…

Y'all...you and I both know things NEVER really calm down! 😂

But what if the thing you think you need to do before asking for help is actually the thing that's keeping you from asking for help? 🤔

I heard something on Jay Shetty's podcast, On Purpose, episode “The Psychology of Financial Freedom” that made me think about this differently. While the episode WAS about money, I immediately thought about photographs:

“I think they struggle because they are relying on motivation to do a job that belongs to systems.”

YES. This is it! 🙌 Organizing years of family photos shouldn't depend on whether you happen to feel motivated one Saturday afternoon. It needs a system. And sometimes, the best thing you can do is let someone else create that system for you! ✨

You don't need to pre-sort everything. You don't need to make neat little piles. You don't need to apologize for what's in the boxes. That's where we start! I mean it. Show me the boxes exactly as they are. The goal isn't to give you another project to manage. It's to take the work off your plate and give you back something finished, organized, and usable! ❤️

Ever sit down to organize your photos and somehow end up three hours deep in family memories? ⏰ October is ADHD Awareness Month, and it got me thinking about why organizing family photos can feel so much harder than it sounds, trust me, I know!

I recently listened to an episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast, “The ADHD Doctor: How to Focus, Stop Procrastinating, Manage Your Emotions, & Feel in Control” episode, and I kept thinking about how much of it applies to photo projects, too! Because organizing family photos means making so many decisions at once.

Who is this? Where was this taken? Do I even keep this one? Wait…what year was that? Oh! I remember this trip. And what happened to grandmother’s sister?

Before you know it, you’ve read every note written on the back of a photograph, gone down a few memory rabbit holes, and completely forgotten you were supposed to be sorting! OH, and then there’s the pile you made…😅

You started with one box. Now you have six piles on the floor that somehow look almost exactly like the mess you started with! 😂 That’s part of what makes photo projects so hard. These aren’t just photos you’re organizing. They’re memories, stories, people, questions, and decisions. They’re all tangled together!

So if you’ve been telling yourself, “I really need to get these photos organized,” but keep putting it off, you’re not alone! Before you save the photo, save what you know about it! ✨

As we wrap up Save Your Photos Month, here's one more little photo tip from me: You know who everyone is. You know where the photo was taken. You might even know the date and all the little details that give the photo context! Make sure that information stays WITH the photo!

Take this family photo of mine from April 1979. It was taken in my grandparents' backyard in Spartanburg, South Carolina. I can tell you exactly who's pictured from left to right, how everyone is connected, and even Blue the dog was there! But unless I document that information, Miller could look at this photo years from now and have NO idea who everyone is or why this photo matters to our family. ❤️

THIS is why I document what I know. When I organize my digital photos, I include helpful information in the file name to keep them in chronological order AND make them easier to understand later. 💻

Check your family photos. Who's missing? 📸

In my past life as a family photographer, I can't tell you how many times I heard a mom say, “These are the only family photos I'm in.” Or, “This is the only photo we have of ALL of us together.” And y'all...it's SO easy for that to happen! ❤️

Because you can be there for every moment, every celebration, every vacation...and somehow still be missing from the photos! It just takes being a little more intentional about getting yourself in the frame, too!

I actually had one of these moments recently at Miller's golf tournament. ⛳️ He was paired with the son of one of my college friends, so we got lucky and walked all 18 holes together! While the boys waited to tee off, my friend sat down in the grass next to her son. Nothing posed. No one looking at the camera. Just a mom sitting beside her son. And I thought...I need to take that picture. 💛 So I snapped it without her noticing, then texted it to her. Her response? “A rare moment I get like that 💙 thank you!!”

And THAT'S exactly why I'm so glad I took it! It's not always about seeing everyone's face. Sometimes it's about capturing the people you love in the moments you want to remember! Because if I hadn't taken that photo, my friend would have been part of that day...but missing from the pictures of it.

A treasure. That's what I call it! ✨

So use the timer. Hand off the phone. Ask someone else to take the picture. And if you're worried about other people taking too many, try my 5 Photo Rule! Ask them to take no more than FIVE. You'll have a few options without 47 versions clogging up your camera roll! 😂

Some of your most important photos may have your family wondering, “Why was this photo saved?” 👀

And honestly...that's a REALLY good question! Because sometimes what matters most about a photo isn't the obvious part. It's the story, place, person, or random little detail that only YOU know.

These two photos of me from 1979 are the perfect example. 📸 One is me dressed up for Halloween 🎃 and the other is me eating watermelon with our neighbors on a summer afternoon. 🍉 But what you wouldn't know from these photos is just how much happened on that driveway! This was the first house I ever lived in after my parents moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. We only lived there until I was four, but SO many of my earliest memories happened right there. ❤️ That driveway curved around like a racetrack, which obviously made it the PERFECT Big Wheel course! 🏎️ We would ride around and around, and before long, every kid in the neighborhood would show up and join us.

And THAT'S what I remember when I look at these photos!

The driveway isn't the focus of either one, but knowing what happened there gives these two ordinary photos so much more meaning. But you'd never know any of that just from looking at them! 💫

The photo will remind you what happened. But will you remember the rest? 📸

September is Save Your Photos Month, a free global event all about organizing, digitizing, and safeguarding our memories! As a member of The Photo Managers, this month means SO much to me! ❤️

Saving photos is important, but saving what you remember about them is too!

I was reminded of this recently when I came across an old photo of Brennen when he was on the Clemson Men's Golf Team from 2000–2001. ⛳️ At first glance, it's just a team photo. But look a little closer and you'll see Brennen in the back, awkwardly leaning over with his leg propped up on a stone wall right behind Coach Larry Penley. 😂

Y'all...when I first saw this photo, I had NO idea there was a whole story behind that pose!

Apparently, the photographer wanted Brennen to do something different and told him to put his leg on the wall. Being as tall as he is, Brennen was used to being sent to the back...but THIS pose stuck with him because it felt so awkward next to all the other guys. We giggled so much when he told me! 😆Suddenly, I wasn't just looking at an old team photo anymore. I knew what made it memorable!

And THIS is why preserving the photo is only part of the job. 🫶 We can scan it, organize it, and safely store it digitally, but without the story, part of the memory can still disappear!

Y'all...my Fleurish presentation was such a FUN experience! ✨

I loved getting to talk all things photo organization and preservation with my Kappa sisters! We had 70+ sisters join in LIVE from across the U.S. and Canada and SO many great questions! 💙

The word “overwhelming” came up again and again when everyone described their photo collections. ❤️ And I get it! When you have SO many photos, where do you even begin? That's exactly why I loved getting to have this conversation! Whether you have boxes of loose photographs, old albums waiting for attention, or years of memories that need a little organization, I hope you walked away with a little more knowledge, a little more confidence, and a better idea of what to do next! 🫶
