Years ago, Diane sat across from a brilliant executive who had every credential you’d want on paper. A sharp strategist. A fast decision-maker. Respected by the board.

And yet something was missing.

It wasn’t skill. It wasn’t experience. It was what Diane has come to call mental discipline—the capacity to shift mindsets, hold paradox, and lead confidently when the ground keeps moving underneath you.

That distinction is at the heart of a recent conversation Diane had with Authority Magazine, where she was asked a question that comes up often in her work: What actually separates good leaders from exceptional ones?

Her answer went somewhere she doesn’t always get to go in a two-minute conversation, into personal mastery, why humility is only possible after self-mastery, and why arrogance is usually a mask for something else entirely.

For leaders navigating transformation right now, and most are, there’s something in this conversation worth sitting with.

That line has stayed with Diane for years. It came from a mentor early in her career, and it continues to shape how she coaches executives today.

After 25+ years working inside 300+ organizations, she has noticed something consistent: the leaders who make the leap from good to exceptional aren’t necessarily the ones with the most polished answers. They’re the ones willing to hear the truth, and willing to speak it constructively themselves.

Diane recently explored this idea and more in an interview with Authority Magazine, including what she believes may be the hidden superpower behind exceptional leadership.

Data Strategy is no longer just a technical function. It's a leadership responsibility.

One of the biggest challenges we see is that organizations either rely too heavily on instinct or become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of data available. Neither leads to better decisions.

The organizations making the greatest progress aren't collecting more data; they're asking better questions.

AI can accelerate analysis, identify patterns, and surface insights faster than ever before. But leaders still have to define what matters, provide context, and translate information into strategic action.

That's where leadership creates value.

Is your organization using data to confirm decisions or to shape better ones?

Curiosity has always been an important leadership trait. In the ERA of AI, it's becoming a competitive advantage.

The strongest leaders we work with aren't the ones who have all the answers. They're the ones who consistently ask better questions.

Questions like:
- What are we not seeing?
- What assumptions should we challenge?
- What could be possible?

We've seen leadership teams transform simply by shifting from reacting to today's challenges to creating space for strategic curiosity. Those conversations lead to better decisions, stronger alignment, and more innovative thinking.

AI can generate insights, scenarios, and possibilities faster than ever before. But it still takes curious leaders to frame the right questions, challenge assumptions, and determine what matters most.

Curiosity isn't just about learning. It's about creating the conditions for better strategy.

Are you spending more time managing what's happening today, or exploring what could shape tomorrow?

In just four years, AI has evolved from helping with individual tasks, to reshaping how entire organizations operate, to now emerging as agentic companions and industrial automation working alongside people.

It's a remarkable shift.

Yet one thing remains true: generative AI still can't set an organization's aspirations, make its toughest leadership decisions, build trust with stakeholders, or generate truly original ideas.

Those responsibilities remain firmly in the hands of leaders.

As executives navigate this next era, one question becomes increasingly important: What are the decisions that only a leader can make?

Diane Egbers explores that question, and why strategic thinking is becoming one of the defining leadership competencies of the AI era, in her latest article.

72%. That is the share of leaders who told Deloitte's 2026 Global Human Capital Trends survey that the volume of data, and their lack of trust in it, has stopped them from making a decision altogether.

Not slowed them down. Stopped them.

Leadership Excelleration's perspective is that this is not simply a data problem. It is a strategic thinking problem.

In this new article, Diane Egbers explores why strategic thinking, not just operational ex*****on, is the leadership imperative of this moment, and what it takes for leaders to move from feeling overwhelmed to gaining clarity.

Quick question for the leaders in our network: how is your team thinking about AI and judgment?

In her latest blog post, Diane Egbers explores why Critical Thinking, not just AI fluency, is becoming the leadership skill that separates the leaders pulling ahead from the leaders falling behind.

She breaks it down into what AI still can't replace:
✔️ Context from real experience
✔️ Conscience built from character and values
✔️ Consequences leaders alone are responsible for

Plus the research behind it, and six practical guardrails for building Critical Thinking on your team.

New from our Founder & CEO, Diane Egbers: "Critical Thinking as a Leadership Essential in the ERA of AI"

AI can draft, summarize, forecast, and report faster than any team could on their own. But two things research is making clear:

- A Harvard Business School & UC Berkeley study found that AI access alone didn't close performance gaps between leaders; it widened them. Judgment and experience were the differentiator.

- MIT researchers found AI sounds most confident in the exact moments it's wrong.

In her latest article, Diane breaks down why Critical Thinking, not AI adoption alone, is becoming the defining leadership capability of this era, and shares the guardrails leaders can use to build it.

According to SHRM's State of the Workplace Report, nearly half of organizations have identified succession planning as a top priority.

Yet only 24% have a formal plan in place. 49% have something informal. And 56% have no plan at all.

The gap between intent and ex*****on is wide, and the cost of that gap tends to show up at the worst possible moments: an unexpected leadership transition, a key executive departure, or a missed growth opportunity because the pipeline wasn't ready.
