Before a log ever reaches the head rig, it stops here. At the log bucker, each log is cut to the right length before moving deeper into the mill. Those cuts help maximize usable lumber, reduce waste, and set the stage for every step that follows.

It’s deck season! Montana's sun, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles can take a toll on any wood deck, but a little maintenance goes a long way. Here are a few keys to keeping it looking its best:

✔️ Start with a thorough cleaning.
✔️ Let the wood dry completely before sealing.
✔️ Choose a penetrating oil-based sealer to protect the wood from the inside out.
✔️ Apply with a natural bristle brush and allow plenty of time to cure.
✔️ Check your deck each year and plan to reseal every 2–3 years, depending on weather exposure.

Staying ahead of maintenance is much easier—and more affordable—than replacing damaged boards later.

And, if your deck could use a little more than a fresh coat of sealer, we have you covered. Whether you need replacement boards, matching lumber, or materials for a complete deck refresh, we're here to help you build an outdoor space that's made to last.

Meet one of the hardest-working machines in the mill: the debarker.
In this video, Ethan is operating the debarker, which prepares each log before it reaches the head rig. While its name suggests it's all about removing bark, its primary job is to create a more uniform log, allowing the head rig to make cleaner, more consistent cuts as the log is broken down into timbers and boards.
From there, those timbers and boards continue through the milling process before eventually becoming the lumber used in homes, shops, barns, and other projects across Montana and beyond.
From inside the cab, you can also get a sense of just how powerful this operation is. It's one of many behind-the-scenes steps that transforms raw Montana timber into the quality lumber our customers rely on.
