Know your lines. Know your blocking. Then let it go.

Emotion is not something an actor has to force, manufacture, or chase. We are already emotionally full simply because we are human.

The work is learning to understand ourselves—what moves us, what matters to us, what brings us joy, fear, pain, longing, and excitement—and discovering the tools that allow us to access that emotional life truthfully.

In Meisner work, we learn to pursue what matters rather than chase the result.

Through imagination and deeply personal daydreaming, we allow ourselves to become genuinely affected by what we're experiencing.

The emotion isn't the goal—it becomes the side effect.

And if something doesn't move you, keep exploring. The deeper you understand yourself, the more truthfully you can bring yourself to the work.

As actors, we can spend so much time wondering if we’re making the “right” choice.

But your job isn’t to make the choice everyone else would make. It’s to find your point of view. Your feelings. Your instincts. And then own them.

Stop asking for permission to feel the way you feel.

Make the choice. Commit to it. And let it be yours.

That’s where truthful, interesting work begins.

"Do you have any idea how liberating it is to not care what people think about you?" — Sanford Meisner

Meisner didn't teach tricks. He taught truth.

The whole foundation of his technique is learning to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances — which means dropping the performance before the performance even starts. No self-consciousness. No second-guessing. Just you, responding honestly, in the moment, to what's actually in front of you.

That's harder than it sounds. Most of us spend our lives managing how we're perceived. Meisner's work asks you to let go of that entirely — and it's uncomfortable at first. Then it's freeing.

That's the training we build every class around: get out of your head, stop performing for an imaginary audience in your mind, and start actually listening and reacting like a real person would.

Because the actors who move us aren't the ones who are trying hardest to look good. They're the ones who aren't trying at all.
