The Leadership Steuben Class of 2026 recently spent time learning about the multigenerational workplace in a meaningful and engaging way. Participants were grouped by generation, giving everyone the opportunity to share their experiences, perspectives, and workplace values before coming together to learn from one another.

It was a powerful reminder that our differences strengthen us- and that understanding one another helps build better leaders and stronger communities.

Gaining followers isn't the same as leading. Leading takes time and intention, care, and a commitment to the long game. Anyone can get people to follow them for a little while. The difference is that true leaders keep those people on their team through change and challenge by understanding what's important to them, and why they do the work they do. Because it was never really about the leader. It was about the people doing something they love. Something that mattered to them. And discovering the part of themselves that a skilled leader helped awaken.

If you want to develop leadership skills in someone you mentor or supervise, the best way to do it is to lead them well yourself. Skills-building classes (like the ones I teach) are great, but if every time they return to the office, they're met with toxicity and a counter-active culture, you're wasting your training budget. Good leaders help the people on their team become the best versions of themselves.
