Most shop owners assume return fraud is a big-box problem. It is not. It is a small-shop problem, because small shops are the ones that rarely look up the original sale.
The National Retail Federation and Happy Returns found that 9% of all retail returns are fraudulent, out of nearly $850 billion returned in 2025. Roughly one refund in eleven.
The fix is not a suspicious clerk. It is three habits:
Look up the original sale before you refund.
Refund to the card, cash or gift card that paid, every time.
Inspect the item for fifteen seconds. Nobody minds.
When was the last time you pulled a refund report by employee or by item?
