Don’t take IT terminology literally 😄

IT comes with a lot of terminology - endpoint detection, conditional access, DNS filtering, network segmentation, vulnerability management, and the list keep growing.

But for business or nonprofit leaders knowing the terminology itself isn’t what matters.
What matters is knowing how a technology decision affects your organization - whether it changes your risk, your costs, or the way your team works.

That’s where a good IT partner can make a difference.

Let CSI Tech Corp help make your IT decisions easier!

When it comes to deciding where to invest, the newest technology isn’t always the best place to start.

Before adding another platform, upgrading equipment, or adopting a new tool, it’s worth taking a step back and looking at the basics.

1. Reliable Backups
If important files suddenly became unavailable, could your organization recover?

Backups are not simply about having another copy of your files. They are about being able to restore what you need and get back to work.

Regularly checking that backups are running, and that files can actually be restored, is an important part of a reliable technology environment.

2. Multi-Factor Authentication

A password alone may not provide enough protection for important accounts.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds another step when someone signs in. That extra layer can help protect accounts even when a password has been compromised.

Microsoft includes MFA among its recommended identity security practices.

3. Staff Training

Your staff interacts with email, shared files, payment information, donor information, and other systems every day. Helping employees recognize suspicious messages, unusual requests, and potential scams can make a meaningful difference.

That’s why a good security practices should be understandable and practical for the people who use them.

4. Device Management

Laptops and other work devices are part of your organization’s technology environment, and need attention too.

Devices should be kept updated, protected, and managed consistently. Knowing what devices your organization has, who is using them, and whether they are properly secured can help reduce unnecessary risk and disruption.

What About New Technology?
New technology can absolutely be a good investment. But what problem is it solving?
If the basics are already in place, a new technology investment may be easier to evaluate and more valuable to the organization.

The goal isn’t to have the newest technology. The goal is to have technology your nonprofit can rely on.

At CSI Tech Corp, we work with nonprofits and local organizations across Minnesota to help make technology more secure, reliable, and practical for the people who depend on it.

Not sure where your organization should start? Let’s talk.

🔔 Between Sunday, July 26 and Monday, July 27 there was a "coordinated cyberattack" targeted more than 30 community water systems 💧 and four cities: Plymouth, South St. Paul, Maple Plain, and Braham – publicly disclosed the attacks on Monday.

While the officials has activated its cybersecurity incident response capabilities to respond to the attacks, the deeper lesson cannot be ignored: cybercriminals are not just targeting large corporations. Local governments, nonprofits, healthcare providers, law firms, accounting firms, and small businesses all rely on technology to keep their organizations running. That makes them potential targets, too. Hackers use automated bots to scan the internet for low-hanging fruit. They want the easiest entry point, which often means smaller organizations operating on the poor IT environment.

You don’t need a massive corporate budget to protect organization, but you do need to take actions now. Start with these 4 important steps today:
1️⃣ Enforce MFA: Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication on every single email, accounting, and CRM account. It stops the vast majority of automated attacks.

2️⃣ Patch Automatically: Ensure all team devices have automatic software updates enabled to seal up known security holes.

3️⃣ Hide Your Assets: Never expose internal servers, backup drives, or remote-access tools directly to the public internet without a secure firewall or VPN.

4️⃣ Train Your Team: Your staff is your frontline. Regular training helps them spot phishing scams before clicking a bad link.

If you’re unsure whether your organization is properly protected, we’re here to help. Leave the cybersecurity to us so you can stay focused on what matters most

ClickFix is a new Cyber Threat that tricks your employees into installing viruses themselves. It doesn't need system vulnerabilities. It needs only one thing: your employee's trust in what they see on the screen.

Why This Is Dangerous Right Now
- Attacks up 517% in the last year (ESET data).
- Disguised as legitimate actions: "bot verification," "fix an error," "update your driver."
- Hits non-IT staff hardest: accountants, office managers, any employee.
- One click and malware is on the computer. A new threat for every business.

The Golden Rule: If a website, email, or video asks you to open "Run" (Win+R) or paste code — don't do it. Close the tab. Contact IT department.

What You Can Do Right Now:
✅ Remind your team: Never paste code from untrusted sources.
✅ If you see an "error" with instructions to copy code — report it to IT immediately.
✅ Block Win+R for standard users (this doesn't affect daily work).

The more people know — the safer our business community.

Stay safe and protect your company.

Not every invoice is real. This email is a real phishing message that was received by the CSI Tech Corp team. The scam is real, it imitates a Geek Squad renewal notice sent to our email, but several warning signs reveal it’s a phishing attempt.

Note: Geek Squad is a legitimate, well-known U.S. tech support service owned by Best Buy, which makes its name a frequent target for impersonation.

Before responding to an unexpected invoice:
- Verify the sender’s email address
- Avoid calling phone numbers listed in the message
- Confirm charges through the company’s official website or account portal

Helping employees recognize these common tactics is one of the easiest ways to reduce cybersecurity risk across your organization.
