🦇 Male Bat Problems vs. Female Bat Problems: Yes, There’s a Difference.

Chris is always explaining this one to customers.

Male bats?
They tend to be loners and enjoy a little privacy. A male may roost by himself or occasionally hang out with a buddy or two. That means you can absolutely have one bat using the same little section of soffit, siding, chimney, or attic over and over again. Making noise at night and leaving a surprising amount of droppings behind for just one guy.

Female bats? They can’t keep a good secret. 😂

When female bats find a warm, protected summer roost, many of our common Pennsylvania species form what’s called a maternity colony. Pregnant females gather together in attics, walls, barns and other protected spaces to give birth and raise their pups.

You know the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child?”

With bats, it takes a colony.

These maternity colonies help provide the warm, stable conditions young bats need while their mothers head out at night to feed. The pups are born in early summer unable to fly and remain in the roost while Mom goes out hunting insects and returns to nurse them.

By the middle of summer, those pups are growing fast and beginning to fly.

And that’s why a bat problem can suddenly look a whole lot bigger toward the end of summer.

What started in spring as a group of adult females can become moms + an entire new generation of pups by late summer.

So when we inspect a home, we're not just asking:

“Do you have bats?”

We’re trying to determine:

🦇 Is this one or two male bats using a seasonal roost?
🦇 Or are we looking at a female maternity colony with young?

That distinction matters — especially when determining when and how the bats can be humanely excluded from the structure.

Bats are incredibly beneficial animals and an important part of Pennsylvania's ecosystem.

We just don't need to share our attic with them.

🐝 From stone farmhouse to wildflower fields.

Chris was high above the ground this weekend performing an aerial honey bee extraction from a stone farmhouse. The colony was carefully removed, relocated, and given a fresh start at our apiary—another successful rescue in the books.

At County Pest, when honey bees can be safely relocated, that’s always the goal. Protect the home. Save the colony. Give the bees somewhere better to thrive. 🌼🐝

What’s in your attic? 🦇

Noises in the attic aren’t always mice or squirrels. Sometimes your attic doubles as a nursery for bats.

During maternity season, female bats gather together in warm, protected spaces to give birth and raise their pups. And when one female finds a safe, comfortable attic, she may be joined by quite a few of her friends.

Bats are incredibly beneficial animals and an important part of our local ecosystem—but they don’t need to share your house with you.

Bat season is in full effect! 🦇

Bats are incredibly beneficial animals, helping control large numbers of night-flying insects throughout the Lehigh Valley. But as important as they are outdoors, we don’t need to share our homes with them.

Little termite tip — and this applies to plenty of other insects too:

Don’t pile mulch above the foundation grade line or up against your siding. Keep a few inches of foundation visible whenever possible.

Mulch holds moisture and can hide termite activity, while also giving ants and other insects a protected path right up to the structure.
