Is it the baby blues, PPD, or PPA? ๐Ÿ’ญ

Maternal mental health doesnโ€™t look just one way, and symptoms can show up anytime during pregnancy or postpartum.

What youโ€™re feeling might be:
โ€ข Baby Blues
โ€ข Depression
โ€ข Anxiety
โœณ๏ธ Perinatal Mental Health Disorders also include OCD, bipolar mood disorders, PTSD, and psychosis. โœณ๏ธ

The Baby Blues are short-term dips in mood caused by the changes of having a baby, and typically dissipate on their own. Depression and anxiety are common, temporary, and treatable, but they do require support.

Too often, parents experience symptoms like: irritability, racing thoughts, guilt, sadness, intrusive thoughts, or constant worryโ€ฆ and donโ€™t realize thereโ€™s a name for it.

When we connect the dots, we make maternal mental health visible.
And when itโ€™s visible, it becomes treatable, supportable, and understood.

๐Ÿ’™ If you see yourself in this, you are not alone
๐Ÿ’™ If you recognize this in someone else, check in

๐Ÿ’™ New Year, New Awareness ๐Ÿ’™

As we step into January, itโ€™s a powerful time to check in on how youโ€™re really feeling during pregnancy and after birth.
Not every postpartum mood change is the same, and knowing the difference can help you get the right support:

๐Ÿ”น Perinatal Depression (PPD): Persistent sadness, low energy, hopelessness, loss of interest; may last months without treatment
๐Ÿ”น Perinatal Anxiety (PPA): Excessive worry, racing thoughts, panic; can interfere with daily life
๐Ÿ”น Perinatal OCD (POCD): Symptoms include obsessions, compulsions, horror about obsessions, fear of being alone with baby, and hypervigilance

โœจ Early recognition leads to earlier support and recovery.

And remember, perinatal mental health conditions can also include Bipolar Mood Disorders, PTSD, and Psychosis.

๐Ÿ’™ You are not alone, and help is available.

If you need support now:
๐Ÿ”ท Call or text the Postpartum Support International HelpLine at 800-944-4773 (no diagnosis needed)
๐Ÿ”ท Call or text the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262
๐Ÿ”ท In a crisis, call or text 988

โœจ A new year can be the beginning of feeling better.

01/12/2026

Wishing you a happy new year. This time of year, in the middle of the winter, can be a difficult time. The light is returning (yay!) but the cold and darkness still continues. This can feel isolating, unmotivating, and for some lead to increased depression.

Sometimes a little extra support and encouragement can help through this season. Our practice has a few telehealth openings remaining with no waitlist at the moment, and openings coming up for walk and talk outdoor therapy options. Both weekly and biweekly spots are available.

We talk most major insurances. Free to send an email or view our website to see if Mama Bear is a good fit for you.
