Most pest problems on a home's exterior start at the roofline.
Wasps and yellow jackets build under eaves and overhangs. Spiders colonize the corners where the soffit meets the fascia. Overwintering insects (stink bugs, box elder bugs, cluster flies) pack into the gaps in that zone to wait out the cold. By the time you see them inside in October, they've been up there since September.
An exterior eave treatment covers the underside of the soffit, the fascia board, the overhang perimeter, and any penetrations in that zone. The Pacific Northwest has active wasp and spider pressure from spring through fall, and the high points of a structure are where that pressure lands first.

The grease trap gets cleaned. The fryer has a maintenance schedule. The floor drain gets mopped over and that's it.

Commercial kitchen floor drains are one of the most common pest harborage points in food service. Drain flies breed in the organic film that coats the inside of the drain pipe below the grate. Cockroaches use floor drains as harborage and transit routes between service periods. Rodents can access a building through drains with deteriorated covers.

The wall vent. The gap under the door frame. The space where the window seal has pulled away from the brick. Those are the entry points. Pests don't come through solid walls. They find the holes your building already has.

An exterior entry point check is an audit of every opening on the exterior: utility penetrations, door sweeps, foundation vents, gaps around window frames, weep holes in the brick. We document what's open and what needs to close.

Those ants didn't end up in that crack by accident.

Ants follow pheromone trails. Chemical paths laid by foragers between the colony and a food source. What looks like random activity is a coordinated route that dozens to hundreds of insects are running on a loop.

A crack as small as 1/16 inch gives most ant species enough clearance to enter a structure. The foragers that found this one are already communicating its location to the rest of the colony.

When the bedding looks like this, the inspection report is going to be interesting.

That dark spotting is f***l staining from bed bug activity. Digested blood. The pattern and volume visible here indicate an infestation that's been active for weeks, not days. Dozens to hundreds of insects cycling through the area on a 3 to 7 day feeding schedule.

Bed bugs don't go far from where they feed. The harborage is almost always in the mattress seams, box spring, headboard, or bed frame. Finding evidence in the bedding confirms they're close.

Live bed bugs and f***l spotting on the bedding means this population has been active for a while. The hardware store spray doesn’t reach the eggs inside the seams. Open the cabinet. We dare you. German cockroaches are the most common species found in residential kitchens, and they're very good at staying out of sight until they can't anymore. Daytime visibility at this scale means the colony has outgrown its available dark space. The number you'd see at 2am is much higher.

Each egg capsule holds up to 48 eggs. A single female produces up to eight capsules in her lifetime.
That's 384 potential individuals from one roach. Do the math on what you're looking at here.
They don't stay in the kitchen either. Cockroaches travel through shared plumbing runs, electrical
conduit, and wall voids. In a multifamily building, one unit's infestation is the building's problem
within weeks.

What you're looking at lives in about 40% of homes with an active bed bug problem before
anyone realizes what they have.

The bedframe is primary real estate. Not the mattress; the frame. The joints, corner brackets,
hollow legs, and screw holes give bed bugs dark, undisturbed harborage within inches of where a
person sleeps every night. A population this dense has been building for weeks. By the time
activity is visible like this, the colony is already in the box spring, the baseboard, and likely the
outlets and furniture within five feet of the bed.

One bed bug can become 300 adults in three months. One fertilized female; no partner needed
after the first encounter. What do most people do when they find this? Spray something from the store, wash the sheets, and sleep somewhere else for a few nights. That doesn't eliminate the colony. It moves it. They come back.

That nest in the tree is not empty.

The larvae cells you see in an active wasp nest are the next generation of workers already
developing. A colony building in a tree or shrub near your home reaches 4,000 to 5,000 workers
by late summer depending on species. Paper wasps and yellow jackets both construct exposed
nests in trees, eaves, and structural gaps — and both become significantly more aggressive as the
season moves into fall and food competition increases.

Disturbing an active nest without the right equipment and treatment protocol is how people end
