The creator economy has made one number extraordinarily seductive: audience size.

100K followers.
500K followers.
1 million followers.

Then comes the rate card. But ask a few basic business questions:

What percentage of that audience actually buys?

What revenue has the audience generated?

What does customer acquisition cost?

How much repeat business is there?

What measurable return did the last brand campaign produce?

Suddenly, follower count tells you very little.

I've seen influencers price access to an audience as though attention itself were the asset - without understanding the economics of the business they're asking to pay them.

Brands shouldn't be buying followers. They should be buying "outcomes."

Reach has value. But reach without conversion is simply visibility. And visibility alone doesn't pay the bills.

I called to make a doctor’s appointment. Before anyone asked about my health, I was asked: “Where were you born?” and “Are you a legal resident or a U.S. citizen?”

I’m a naturalized U.S. citizen - and the questions stopped me cold.

Florida law requires certain hospitals to ask patients about immigration status. Patients can decline to answer, and care cannot be denied based on the response. But what happens when the question itself creates fear?
