Turkey Foot Mounting Tutorial – Creating a Clean Rock/Base Transition

These photos show the process of mounting turkey feet into a habitat base using metal leg rods and then blending the transition area so the feet appear naturally attached to the rock. Just one way of many we will be sharing

Step 1 – Install the Foot Rods
* Position the turkey feet exactly where you want them on the habitat base.
* Drill holes slightly larger than the leg rods
* Test fit both feet to ensure proper stance, balance, and toe placement.
* Make any adjustments before permanently securing the feet.

Step 2 – Secure the Feet
* Set the rods into the habitat base using epoxy, Bondo, or a similar structural filler.
* Make sure the feet are level and positioned naturally.
* Allow the adhesive to cure completely before moving the mount.

Step 3 – Fill the Gaps

Photo 1: Shows the rod installed with the surrounding gap still visible.

Photo 2: Shows the gap filled with sculpting material.

* Use Apoxie Sculpt, epoxy clay, or habitat sculpting material.
* Pack the material tightly around the rod and foot opening.
* Blend the material into the surrounding rock texture.

Step 4 – Match the Habitat Texture
* While the sculpting material is still workable, texture it with:
* Small wire brushes
* Dental tools
* Natural bark
* Rock stamps
* Continue the existing rock pattern so the repair disappears.

Step 5 – Paint and Finish
* Allow the sculpting material to cure.
* Paint to match the surrounding habitat colors.
* Dry brush highlights and shadows to blend everything together.
* Seal if desired.

Pro Tip
Leave a slight depression around the turkey leg while sculpting. This creates a natural “weight-bearing” appearance, making it look like the bird is actually gripping and standing on the rock rather than simply inserted into it.
