Some people like shopping for seed online, and some people like standing in a room full of it, reading labels and asking questions. This post is for the second group.

Our seed room holds the full lineup — wildflowers, native grasses, herbs, regional mixes — all sorted and labeled, with real people around who can help you match seed to your actual yard instead of guessing off a photo. Tell us what you're working with (full sun, part shade, a small bed, a whole pasture) and we'll point you toward what'll do well there.

Fall is the season to get it done, so come on out.

One week out from Fall Festival, Saturday, September 26, starting at 11 am.

If you've got kids, this is the one to circle — pumpkin painting, face painting, a Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt through the gardens, and a giant Corn Box that tends to hold their attention a good long while. There's live music from The Frumkins too, so there's a reason for the grown-ups to stick around as well.

New this year, we've got local artisan vendors joining us on site, so while the kids are busy painting pumpkins, there's plenty for the rest of us to browse too.

Admission is free; a few of the children's activities carry a small fee.

Before it's a packet on a shelf, seed looks like this — a handful straight out of the field, stems and chaff included. This is lemon mint, freshly harvested here on the farm.

Not everyone planting a fall wildflower bed can make it out to see that process in person, so here's the reminder: everything that starts out looking like this ends up shoppable online too. If you're gardening anywhere in Texas or Oklahoma, start with our regional native wildflower mix — it's put together specifically for this area, so everything in the packet is suited to our soil and climate and timed for fall planting. From there, the online shop has individual wildflower varieties, native grasses, herbs, and specialty mixes.

What's blooming right now at Wildseed: zinnias, sunflowers, and cosmos, all together, painting the rows in gold, orange, and every shade of pink. It's one of our favorite stretches of the year here at Wildseed.

If you've been meaning to get out to the farm, this is the week to see it. Walk the flower fields, pick out a few pumpkins to take home for the porch, and stop by the nursery for your wildflower seed — fall is the best time to plant for next spring's bluebonnets. Stay for a glass of w**e and let the day unfold.

Long before wildflower seed was something you could order with a click, it was something almost nobody grew on purpose. Wildseed Farms started here in Fredericksburg back in 1983 — making us the original wildflower farm in the country. More than four decades later, we're still the nation's largest working wildflower farm, with fields of natives growing right outside our door.

There was no playbook for any of it. So when our founder John needed equipment that simply didn't exist, he built it himself — custom machinery designed to plant and harvest wildflower seed on a scale no one had attempted before. His resourcefulness was even featured by National Geographic.

That pioneering streak still shapes how we do business today. We grow our own seed, harvest it, clean it, and sell it directly to you — no middleman in between.

Our annual Fall Festival is back — Saturday, September 26, starting at 11 am, out at the farm.

It's become one of our favorite days of the year: live music from The Frumkins, pumpkin painting, face painting, a Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt, and a giant Corn Box to keep the kids busy while the grown-ups wander the gardens and trails with a glass of w**e or a cold b**r in hand. The gift shop and nursery will be stocked for fall, too.

New this year, we're adding local artisan vendors on site for the day — one more reason to slow down and shop small while you're here.

Quick reminder for anyone new to gardening in Texas: fall is our planting season, not spring.

It sounds backwards if you grew up anywhere else, but it makes sense once you think about it. Seed sown from September through November — before the first hard freeze — spends the cool, wet winter months settling into the soil and building roots, with no summer heat to fight against. Then when spring shows up, it's already established. It just blooms.

Over the next couple of weeks we'll be sharing everything seed-related — what's stocked in our seed room, what you can order from the online shop, and what's already potted and growing in the nursery for anyone who'd rather plant something today instead of waiting on seed to sprout. Consider this the "get moving" post. The window closes at the first hard freeze, so there's no need to rush, but there's also no reason to wait.

Fall officially arrived a few weeks ago, according to the calendar. Out here in the Hill Country, the thermometer didn't get the memo — but that didn't stop this week's pumpkin delivery, and it hasn't stopped the flowers either.

The truck pulled in from Floydada, we unloaded it box by box, and by the end of the week the patch was full again — classic carving pumpkins, the pale, ghostly ones, and gourds in shapes that don't seem entirely biologically reasonable. Meanwhile, out in the Meadows, the zinnias are starting to bloom in full gold and orange rows, and the walking trails are open for anyone who wants to stretch their legs before or after pumpkin picking.

So even while we're all still running the AC, there's plenty of reason to come out — grab a few pumpkins for the porch, walk the trail, see what's blooming.

John's been trying to grow bluebonnets in one particular corner of the farm for three years running. Seed down every fall, next to nothing come spring.

This year he finally tried something different — planted a different flower there instead. And it's a good reminder of how particular bluebonnets really are about their ground. They want full sun and, rocky, well-drained soil. Rich, heavy soil, or a spot that stays a little too moist, can grow plenty of other things well — it's just not bluebonnet country.

We will be out seeding the fields for next spring in a few weeks, and every year the crew learns a little more about which corners of Wildseed want to be bluebonnets and which ones would rather be something else.
