Pink sapphire demand has had its peaks and valleys over the past few decades, with some pop culture moments bringing pink hues to the fore and making it more popular, from Jennifer Lopez’s pink diamond engagement ring to Ben Affleck in 2002 to the 2023 blockbuster hit Barbie.

Right now, it’s not particularly strong, and yet prices at the fine and extra fine end have spiked over the past two to three years. This seems largely due to one major factor: supply, or rather, a lack thereof.

Today’s complex faceting and carving techniques are turning out very unique and, from an appraisal perspective, sometimes challenging gemstones mounted in jewelry.

Weights and measurements can be less straightforward when a mounted gemstone has extensively faceted or carved surfaces. Comparables can be more difficult to find. Some of the more extreme examples might defy description: Is it a carving? Or a fantasy cut? Or is it both?

Live in the app now! GemGuide has made changes to the ruby pricing charts.

💎Rubies from Mozambique have increased in price.

💎We have also modified the Burma ruby charts. Due to scarcity of material in the category creating a situation where price is secondary to availability, we felt that offering pricing across our traditional 1-to-10 quality range was no longer practical. Starting now in the app and in the July/August issue, the Burma ruby chart will provide pricing for only four grades. To price other grades, GemGuide users should interpolate from the listed categories.

Similar changes to sapphire prices will be released along with the launch of the July/August issue.

Asterism is a rare phenomenon in gems, and it captures the attention of many collectors and connoisseurs.

For gem trader and author Martin P. Steinbach, AIGS AG and DGemG FGG, it became a life obsession that led to him trying to gather as many as possible into one place.

This resulted in the Martin P. Steinbach Star Collection (MPSSC), comprising more than 1,200 gems, which he has called one of the biggest and most complete private star gem collections in the world.” Read more about it in our May/June issue.
