Appraising for institutions and charitable donations can be rewarding projects, but it’s not something an appraiser should throw themselves into without due diligence, education, and building a strong network to help.

Here, one expert takes GemGuide readers through four such projects he has worked on and considerations for each, from valuing a large tsavorite garnet heading to a well-known museum collection to appraising a pin collection belonging to a well-known diplomat.

Learn more in our July/August issue.

Spessartine is a manganese-aluminum garnet that comes in a range of orange to reddish brown hues.

There are only a few gem deposits around the world that have produced gem-quality spessartine; of particular note are Namibia, Tanzania, and Nigeria, the last of which has produced some of the largest and finest spessartines found.

Orange garnet has been noted as one of the gems doing well at several recent trade shows, and the gem could stand to benefit further from an overall increased interest in orange gems.

Learn more about spessartine garnet in today’s market in our latest Gem Focus newsletter, which is free!

The Belmont mine in Brazil is one of the most important emerald mines in the world, producing fine greens that can rival those from other sources.

To highlight the quality and color of its stunning emeralds, the miner has teamed up with brand development agency Julls and a select group of designers to showcase these gems in contemporary fine jewelry.

The move makes it the latest in a number of large producers that have collaborated with designers to tell the story of the mine.

Read more about the collaboration in our latest Trade in Focus newsletter.
