Culture is not an accident.
Leadership is not an accident.

High-performing organizations don’t emerge because they hired talented people or introduced another employee engagement initiative. They are intentionally designed.

The organizations that consistently attract, retain, and develop exceptional talent have leaders who make deliberate choices about how people are hired, developed, supported, recognized, and prepared for what’s next.

That’s why I know:

Organizations don’t accidentally become great places to work. Leaders design them.

Design requires intention. It requires courage. And it requires leaders who understand that every decision, from succession planning and manager capability to wellbeing and AI adoption, shapes the employee experience.

Great workplaces are built one leadership decision at a time.

What’s one leadership decision you’ve seen make the biggest difference in creating a great place to work?

Every board manages financial risk.

Every board manages operational risk.

Does your board speak the language of human capital risk with the same level of fluency?

Too often, workforce discussions focus on headcount, turnover, engagement, or succession as isolated HR topics. Yet these same issues influence ex*****on, innovation, customer experience, and long-term enterprise value.

The question is whether leaders know how to identify, quantify, and govern the risk of losing the value of human capital.

This is the conversation I am passionate about having with executive teams and boards because human capital is more than an HR issue.

It's a business issue.
A governance issue.
And increasingly, a competitive advantage.

If you serve on a board or regularly present to one, I would love to hear your perspective:
How would you rate your board's fluency in human capital risk?

📍 Indianapolis, I’m here! 🎤✨

In a few hours, I will have the privilege of joining HR leaders at the SHRM Indiana Annual Conference 2026 for a conversation I believe is becoming increasingly urgent.

Here is the question at the center of my session:
💭 What is the financial cost of human capital risk your organization can already see, but has not yet quantified?

Leadership burnout.
Critical talent attrition.
Succession gaps.
Workforce instability.
Concentrated institutional knowledge.
Depleted leadership capacity.

We often discuss these as HR challenges.

Yet when they threaten ex*****on, continuity, productivity, growth, or enterprise value, they are much more than HR challenges. They are business risks.

Today, we are going beyond engagement scores and traditional workforce reporting.

We are talking about:
📊 Translating people risk into business language
💰 Connecting human capital exposure to financial consequences
🏛️ Strengthening board-level conversations
🔄 Quantifying continuity and succession risk
⚡ Positioning HR as a value-protection engine

And yes, we will be gathering live data from the room about board fluency in human capital risk. I am especially curious to see how the results compare with responses I’ve already collected.

🎤 The ROI of Resilience: Quantifying Human Capital Risk for the Boardroom
📅 Tuesday, August 25
⏰ 4:00–5:00 PM
📌 ICC 104–106

If you are at SHRM Indiana, come find me. Come add your voice to the data. Come challenge the thinking.

And please say hello. ❤️

I am looking forward to the conversation - if you miss the session you can stay in touch with me here: https://lnkd.in/gg-Kd3fe

Strong governance is about more than oversight, it is about asking the right questions before risks become realities.

One area that deserves far more attention in today’s boardrooms is human capital risk.

Boards routinely review financial, operational, cybersecurity, and regulatory risks. Yet the risks associated with leadership continuity, succession, workforce capability, organizational culture, and executive wellbeing often receive less rigorous governance, despite their direct impact on long-term performance.

The most effective boards don’t simply receive workforce updates. They understand how people strategy influences business strategy, enterprise risk, and sustainable value creation.

As organizations continue to navigate AI, economic uncertainty, and changing workforce expectations, board fluency in human capital will become an increasingly important differentiator.

Governance is evolving, and so is the role of HR in helping boards see around corners.

Thank you, Boardsi, for highlighting this important conversation.

Artificial intelligence will continue to transform how work gets done.

Yet some of the most important responsibilities of leadership remain deeply human.

Culture.
Trust.
Succession.
Judgment.
Connection.
Courage.

These are more than tasks to automate. They are capabilities to strengthen.

This conversation with HRO Today explores why HR leaders have an opportunity, and a responsibility, to focus on what AI can do, and on what organizations cannot afford to lose as technology continues to evolve.

One question I continue to ask executive teams and boards is:
As AI changes the way work is done, what human capabilities will become even more valuable?

I'd love to hear your perspective.
