Wise Snacks, maker of the delicious Wise potato chips, is from Berwick, Pennsylvania! What started with a frugal grocer and an idea turned into a much-loved snack.

It all started in 1921 when Earl Wise, Sr. was a young grocer with too many potatoes. Being a businessman, he decided to use the extra potatoes to make potato chips. He did all the work by hand and sold
the chips in brown paper bags from his store.

Only four years after he made his first potato chips, he opened his first production plant. This 32’ x 75’ concrete building continued to expand over the next two decades until 1944. It evolved into the potato chips we know and love today.

Ira Middleswarth & Son was founded in 1942 by Bob Middleswarth. It was Bob who cooked the first batch of Middleswarth Potato Chips and distributed them in wax bags from his family home in Beavertown, PA.

Middleswarth started as a four-man operation. Bob, his mother Lottie, and two employees could make fifteen pounds of chips in a single hour. By 1958 the company expanded to 20 employees who could make 350 pounds of chips in an hour. And then in 1961 they expanded again to a new facility where they could make 2,600 pounds of chips an hour. This all leads up to today, where Ira Middleswarth & Son Potato Chips are manufactured in Middleburg!
