Give yourself grace.

I say this in workshops all the time because I watch people judge themselves before they’ve even had a chance to speak.

They worry about how they sound, whether they know enough and compare themselves to mothers in the room. Meanwhile, everyone else is probably worrying about themselves too.

Relax your shoulders. Take a breath. And yes… Smile!

And then say what you came to say.

September 19 felt pretty far away when we started our Tuesday training rides.

Not anymore!

We’re officially in the final stretch for Pedal for Purpose and I’m getting excited.

We’ve put in a lot of miles together this summer, made some new friends, pushed ourselves, and hopefully raised a whole lot of awareness for why we’re doing this in the first place.

There’s still time to join us, too.

Good morning!

It’s Tuesday. Know what that means?! We’re riding after work. Meet us at the East side of the Walkway over the Hudson by 5:30pm and we’ll cruise across the Walkway together.

It’s all to raise awareness and community around Pedal for Purpose, an annual fundraiser for my family’s nonprofit: Forgotten Children of Haiti.

I've been listening to Mark Manson's Solved podcast, and one episode was all about luck, but the takeaway wasn't that successful people are lucky.

It was that some opportunities are created simply because you keep showing up, meeting people, trying new things, and putting yourself in situations where good things can happen.

Pedal for Purpose is about so much more than one ride in September.

For me, it's the Tuesday night group rides. Catching up with people, encouraging each other, and watching our little community grow every week.

It's coming home and asking my wife and daughters if they want to go for a bike ride, too.

It's getting outside, challenging myself, and being a little healthier than I was yesterday.

And it's knowing that every mile we ride and every dollar we raise is going toward something that really matters.

I've been to Haiti. I've seen the challenges people face there, and that's why this ride means so much to me. It's an opportunity to give back in a meaningful way.

I've been running workshops with high school interns, college students, nonprofit teams, bank leaders... and I've been reflecting.

The audience, goals, and jobs are all different, but almost everyone walks into the room wanting the same thing.

To communicate with confidence.

One of the students in a recent workshop stood up, looked around the room, and said,

"I can't do this."

So we stopped.

I asked him a few questions, not about the presentation, but about what he was really trying to say. Then I asked him to imagine he was talking to one person instead of the whole room.

Everything changed. He wasn't performing anymore. He was simply sharing something that mattered to him.
