A business name can become one of your most valuable assets.

You spend years building recognition, earning customer trust, creating goodwill and establishing a reputation around that name.

But building the brand is only part of the job.
You also have to think about protecting it.

Trademark protection can help establish and protect your rights in the brand identifiers that distinguish your business from others.

Because the question isn't simply:
“How much does it cost to protect my brand?”

The better question is:
“What could it cost me if I don't?”

If you've built something worth recognizing, it's worth understanding how to protect it.

Save this post and share it with a business owner who needs to hear it.

You’ll invest in the website.
You’ll invest in the space.
You’ll invest in the branding, the marketing, the products and years of building your reputation.

But when it comes to protecting the name behind it all, suddenly the legal fee feels like too much.

Here’s the thing: your brand is an asset.
And the real cost may not be what you spend to protect it. It may be what happens when you don’t.

Protecting your trademark isn’t just another business expense. It’s an investment in something you’ve already spent years building.

Because expensive isn’t doing it right. Expensive is having to fix it when it’s too late.

Daisuke Inoue developed his 8-Juke karaoke machine in Kobe in 1971. He combined existing technology, a microphone, amplifier, coin box and eight-track player to create something entirely new for the market. But he never patented it.

And this is where the story gets interesting.

Inoue didn’t think of the machine as something that needed a patent. In his mind, he had simply put existing pieces together. And he didn’t regret the decision, even though karaoke went on to become a global phenomenon.

There’s an important IP lesson here: you don’t have to invent something completely from scratch for intellectual property to matter.

Sometimes the value is in the way you combine existing ideas, technology, creativity and know-how to create something new.

So before you launch that product, build that brand or bring that big idea to market, it’s worth asking: what exactly have I created, and how can I protect it?

That’s what we’re here to help you understand.

📋 Grab our free IP checklist and start thinking about your intellectual property before you need to protect it.

Okay, so we’re still doing the back-to-school thing over here.

Last week, I gave you a little peek at the prep. This week, I’m thinking about something completely different: the brands we identify with.

Because let’s be honest… we all have our brands.
I’m currently an Apple girl and a Starbucks girl. 😂 What’s yours...and why?

Tell me in the comments. 👇🏾

And if you’re building a brand of your own, don’t forget to grab our free IP checklist to make sure you’re protecting what you’re building.

Your brand is more than a name. It’s an asset you’ve spent time, money, and creativity building.

So what happens when someone else starts using that same name?

Trademark protection can give you stronger legal footing to protect what you’ve built, and the earlier you think about it, the better.

If you’re building a business and wondering whether your brand is actually protected, start here.

Grab our FREE IP Checklist and see what you should be thinking about now, not after there’s a problem.

Back to the books.

Law school classes are about to start, and Professor Jan is getting ready to teach trademark law this semester.

Between prepping for class, working through trademarks and contracts, and wondering where the summer went… it’s officially prep time.

Just a little behind-the-scenes look at the work that happens before the classroom doors open.

What are you building? A brand. A collection. A creative work. A cultural legacy.

You’ve poured your creativity, time, and energy into making it yours. But have you thought about what it takes to protect it?

Intellectual property protection isn’t something to think about only after there’s a problem. The right time to understand your options is while you’re building.

Whether you have questions about trademarks, copyright, fashion, or cultural heritage, start the conversation early.

One of the biggest misconceptions in entrepreneurship is that you need to have everything figured out before you start asking for help.

You don’t.

In fact, knowing what you don’t know, and getting the right information early, can be one of the smartest things you do for your business.

How is your business structured?
Who owns the work being created?
What should you be protecting?
What happens when someone wants to collaborate?
Who owns the content, designs, ideas, or other intellectual property being created?

You don’t need to know all the answers before you speak to a lawyer.

You need to know that these are questions worth asking.

Because legal strategy shouldn’t only enter the conversation when something has gone wrong. It can be part of how you build the business correctly from the beginning.

Your idea may be where it starts.
Your strategy is what helps you build it.

And protecting what you build is part of the work, too.

What’s one business question you’ve been meaning to ask but haven’t?

Every post you create has value.

Your videos. Your captions. Your course materials. Your podcast. Your brand name. Even the way you package your ideas.

These aren't just "content." They're intellectual property.

Too many creators wait until someone copies their work before thinking about protection. By then, you're reacting instead of preventing.

The earlier you start treating your content like a business asset, the stronger your foundation becomes.

Protect your creativity while you're building, not after it's been taken.
