On June 3rd, Mayor Lucas had a grand surprise for Sly and all of Kansas City!

Mayor Lucas unveiled a beautiful statue of Sly at the Sylvester “Sly” James, Jr. Pavilion at the Kansas City Convention Center, honoring Mayor James’ legacy and service to our city.

It was not only an amazing honor, but a truly moving event. From Sly and us here at Wickham James, we could not be more grateful and appreciative of this amazing city we call home.

Mediation isn't "keeping the peace." It's actually quite the opposite.

Mediation is there to scrounge up the uncomfortable truths and hard conversations. We want to see those competing personalities and varying values on full display.

At the end of the day, the parties are there for the same reasons. To get back on the same page. We just need to get through the good, the bad, and the ugly to get there.

We will get to peace, but we have to walk through a jungle of opinions and perspectives first.

Picture it. A beautiful, multi-corporation collaboration project. It's just wonderful.

Then, you suddenly have different goals, different values, different pressures, different timelines, different definitions of success, and, worst of all, different coffee preferences.

All those differences are where the real work starts. No, not by getting everyone to agree, but by moving everyone forward despite the disagreements. The big picture doesn't care about who likes milk in their coffee and who doesn't, and neither should you.

There is a huge difference, and if you don't figure it out now, you certainly will when results start to look wonky.

In true alignment, there will be disagreements, questions, pushback, and clarification. You want that. You don't want all smooth sailings ahead. A Yes-Team isn't the holy grail.

The healthiest organizations we’ve worked with aren’t conflict-free. They just know how to navigate conflict without letting it derail the mission.

Sometimes it looks like:

- Two leadership teams that stopped listening to each other
- Community partners frustrated behind the scenes
- A project is losing momentum because nobody wants to address the real issue in the room

It can all depend on the way you communicate. You have to ask yourself, “Am I communicating to connect or just to control the narrative?”

Your people can feel the difference. Your audience can feel the difference. Whether you're just talking to the team about a process change or speaking to the public during a press release, this question is vital.

We’ve seen organizations spend so much time crafting the perfect statement that they forget to sound human in the process.

Sometimes the message that lands best is the one that feels honest, direct, and a little uncomfortable.

You know what is so underrated in our industry?

A leader admitting, "You're right. We need to rethink this."

So simple, yet so unimaginable for a lot of us. We've all known or worked under leaders who have a "my way or the highway" standpoint, but we all know how that goes.

The strongest and most impactful leaders listen, take in different perspectives, and admit that things could change.
