The Low Hanging Fruit: Means of Egress
OSHA requires that exits shall be arranged and maintained as to provide free and unobstructed egress. This means that blocking exits with materials and equipment could be obstructions and considered a citation. Another area is stairwells, sometimes workers store materials or tools in stairwells or landings, and this could also be an easy citation for a compliance officer to write.

The Low Hanging Fruit: Warning Line Systems for Fall Protection
OSHA Allows Warning lines to be used for fall protection on low slope roofs for roofing operations as long as they are set 6 feet back form the edge and 10 feet back from the edge perpendicular to mechanical equipment travel. This is only for low slope roofing installations and any other work being done must have the warning lines erected 15 feet back form the edge (OSHA letter of interpretation). For trades like those installing solar panels, siding, electrical, HVAC, etc. they would have to install their warning lines at 15 feet from the edge or you another form of fall protection (PFAS, Guard rails, etc.) this can be an easy citation for a compliance officer to write in that situation.

The Low Hanging Fruit: Ladders Being Used Correctly
While this is a broad subject, OSHA requires ladders be used as the manufacturer intended (1926.1053(b)(4)). One example of this would be the step ladder, the traditional step ladder must be used all the way open with its braces locked in place and cannot be used in the fold position leaned up against a wall. There are some newer ladders that are made so they can be used leaned up against a wall but cannot be used for access to another level in that configuration. Ladders vary by type and manufacturer so always to make sure to read the instructions and warning labels on the ladders you use, otherwise this can be an easy citation for a compliance officer to write.

The Low Hanging Fruit: Liquid Propane Tank Storage
Per OSHA 1926.153 (g) propane tanks need to be stored upright and secured against tipping. This also carries over the transporting under DOT and FMCSA regulations that the cylinders must be secured and stored upright. Also, your propane tanks should be labeled as such, many containers come with a plastic band/ label around them but after use about the facility or jobsite this band/ label may deteriorate and fall off, leaving the cylinder unlabeled and an easy citation to for a compliance officer to write.

The Low Hanging Fruit: Crane Inspections
OSHA requires that Cranes be inspected visually at the beginning of each shift by a competent person, a documented monthly inspection (retained for 3 months) by a competent person AND a documented annual inspection by a qualified person and after a repair or adjustment is made that relates to safe operation by a qualified person. It is also advisable that contractors request copies of these inspection reports from subcontractors prior to having their crane on site.

The Low Hanging Fruit: First Aid Kits
Per OSHA 1926.50(d)(2) The contents of the first aid kit shall be placed in a weatherproof container with individually sealed packages for each type of item, and shall be checked by the employer before being sent out on each job and at least weekly on each job to ensure that the expended items are replaced. With that being said employers should make sure the first aid kits they are purchasing meet these requirements (weather proof container, individually sealed items. etc.) as well as make sure someone is checking the first aid kits on site to make sure they are accessible and fully stocked. Otherwise, this is a fairly simple citation for a compliance officer to write.

The Low Hanging Fruit: Safety Monitor System for Fall Protection
Per OSHA a safety monitor can be used for fall protection for LOW SLOPE ROOFING work. While this system can be used, the monitor must be a competent person (probably not the guy that you just hired yesterday), be on the same level as those being monitored, no mechanical equipment can be used, the monitor cannot do anything but monitor (no passing materials to others, using phone, etc.) and must be able to see and orally communicate with all of those they are monitoring at all times. The are several other rules that need to be followed but what is listed above seems to be where many OSHA violations come from when they are not strictly followed. The Low Hanging Fruit: Temporary Lights Not Suspended by Electrical Cords - OSHA requires that Temporary lighting may not be suspended by their electrical cords unless the light and cords are designed to for that means of suspension. (1926.405(a)(2)(ii)(F)) remember to check you temporary lighting to make sure it is designed for such and save that information somewhere in the event you need to prove that to a compliance officer.
