Burnout has a funny way of convincing us that rest is something we earn.
Finish the project. Answer the emails. Take care of everyone else and put out their fires.
Get through this week, this month, this season, THEN you can rest.
But that time for rest rarely comes.

I’m writing this from Alaska on a bucket list trip for my 86-year-old mother. And that changes the perspective a little. "Someday" isn’t actually a date on the calendar.
There will always be another email. Another deadline. Another project. Another person who needs something from us. But there are some opportunities that don't come back around.

So right now, I get to experience Alaska with my mom. To see the mountains, the glaciers, the ridiculous beauty, And, more importantly, to watch her experience something she has always wanted to do.

I talk about burnout for a living, and one of the things I believe deeply is that burnout isn't about working too much. Sometimes it's about allowing work, responsibility, and productivity to become so important that everything else gets the leftovers.

Rest isn't the reward for finally getting everything done, because everything is never done.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is put up the out-of-office message, get on the plane, take the trip, and remember that your life is happening right now, not after your to-do list is finished.

The emails will be there when I get home. But I will never again get this trip. And THAT is worth making room for. ❤️

When i said summertime and cake make me happy, I meant it...
This cake didn't come to bed with me, but it did remind me to celebrate the small moments like dinner with family 💛
