Michigan Citizen Only Voting Amendment Clears Board of Canvassers
BALLOT INITIATIVE WOULD PROVIDE THAT ONLY U.S. CITIZENS ARE ELIGIBLE VOTERS

LANSING, MI - Kurt O’Keefe with Americans for Citizen Voting Michigan released the following statement today upon approval by the Michigan Board of Canvassers of the petition summary and approval as to form for a Michigan Citizen Only Voting Amendment.

“I applaud the Michigan Board of Canvassers for approving the petition form and 100-word summary. This is a critical first step in protecting our elections and strengthening the vote of Michiganders statewide. It is imperative that only Americans vote in not only federal, but state and local elections as well. We look forward to the next step in the process – educating voters on the importance of this measure, collecting the necessary signatures, and winning on the ballot in November 2026.”

Former Secretary of State and current State Senator Ruth Johnson also commended the Board of State Canvassers for their action, “I commend the Michigan Board of State Canvassers for approving the citizen-only voting amendment 100-word summary and moving it through the process. This is a vital step in protecting the integrity of our elections and ensuring that only American citizens are casting ballots in Michigan’s state and local elections in compliance with the Michigan Constitution. The right to vote is one of the most sacred foundations of citizenship, and this amendment will help safeguard that fundamental principle for generations to come."

The ballot language submitted to the Board of Canvassers would (1) provide that only U.S. citizens are eligible voters in all state and local Michigan elections; (2) allow citizens to provide documentary proof of citizenship for new voter registrations, while mandating that the Secretary of State verify the citizenship of existing registered voters and follow a legal process to remove non-citizens from the state’s voter rolls; and (3) require photo ID to cast a ballot in person and documentation to vote absentee. The measure also provides identification documents at no cost for those experiencing financial hardship.
