Looking for something to do this Labor Day weekend? Naperville Last Fling IS THE PLACE TO BE😎🌭

We've had the honor of sponsoring Last Fling in years past, & it's always held a special place in our hearts. What people don't always realize is that this entire event, four days of music, food & family fun, is put on ENTIRELY BY VOLUNTEERS. Nobody pays the Naperville Jaycees to give up their summer & put this together. They do it because they love their community, & over the years it's raised millions for local causes, including some of the very parks & playgrounds you might walk past downtown!

As a local, family business, we know what it means to pour your heart into something for the people around you & your community. That's exactly what the Jaycees do, & we've never stopped admiring it.

This year, they put together something for everyone so support some of our favorite neighborhood do-gooders this weekend & enjoy:

Summer isn't over in Lisle just because the calendar flipped to September. We're approaching another stretch of 90ish degree days this week, with heat index values climbing over 100. That's well above what's typical for early September around here, & the pests have definitely noticed.🌞

Hot, humid weather keeps insect metabolisms high. They eat more, stay active longer & keep looking for food, water & cooler hiding spots. In our area, that shows up in a few specific ways.

🐝 Yellow jackets & wasps are at their worst. Late summer is when colonies are biggest & outdoor food is harder to find. That's why they get extra aggressive around decks, trash cans & Labor Day cookouts. They're after protein, sugar & water so your burgers, soda can & dripping hose all look like a buffet to these guys.

🐜 Ants head for moisture. When the ground dries out & the air stays hot, pavement ants & odorous house ants push toward kitchens, bathrooms & leaky pipes. A few scouts on the counter now often means a larger colony nearby.

🐭 Mice start scouting indoors. Extreme heat makes the outdoors less comfortable. Rodents look for cooler, damper spots (basements, garages, gaps around foundations) earlier than people expect when days stay this warm.

Quick things you can do to keep them away from your cookout this week:
-Use a lid or straw on drinks (a big reason for stings is a wasp crawling into a can unseen)
-Set food out in shorter windows instead of leaving it out all afternoon
-Skip strong perfumes & scented sunscreen since they can draw wasps in like food does
-Keep trash & cans in a lidded bin away from the eating area
-Set out a decoy, like a small bowl of sugar water, a little ways off from the table
-If you've already spotted a nest nearby, get it handled before guests arrive rather than during the party

We've been getting a lot of calls about them lately, so we wanted to share a few tips to help keep your deck wasp free this season 🐝

-Avoid heavily scented products when spending time outside.

-Light colored/plain/muted clothing tends to attract less attention than floral patterns.

-A fan on the deck can also help since they have a hard time flying in a strong breeze. An oscillating or box fan pointing towards you is one of the cheapest & easiest options that works great for this & also helps disperse the scent that is drawing them to you.

-Stay calm if one approaches since fast movement triggers their defensive instincts. They don't smell fear but they can smell when another one in the area is distressed

-Check for early nest activity since they're most active now. Wasps often build in eaves, deck corners & under railings, & catching a nest when it's small (golf ball size or less) is much easier & safer to deal with than waiting. Recently we found a nest this size & it's a good example of what to look out for!

-Keep food & sugary drinks covered when eating outside. Wasps are drawn to protein in early summer & sugar later in the season, so covered cups & sealed containers go a long way.

-Empty standing water & rinse out recycling. Sugary residue in cans & bottles is a big draw, & they'll also visit water sources on hot days.

-Seal small gaps around siding, soffits & utility lines. Wasps look for tight, protected spaces to start a nest, so closing those off early can prevent one from forming in the first place.

-Getting chased instead of just visited? There may be a nest nearby you haven't found yet. Bald faced hornets especially will patrol around their nest & go after anything they see as a threat, deck-sitters included!

-If you do spot a nest, don't try to knock it down or spray it yourself, especially if it's already established. Disturbing it can trigger a defensive swarm. It's best to have it removed professionally.

After a busy summer full of travel, jobs & all the chaos that comes with preparing for life after graduation, we finally got to meet with each of our 2026 Men in Black Scholarship winners & hand them their awards in person! 🎓🎉

Since we weren’t able to get everyone together for the breakfast we had originally planned, we put together a small care package to go along with each $500 award, including school supplies, a Starbucks gift card & a Men in Black charger keychain, so each award presentation could still feel like a celebration!

This role is simple: you'll make outgoing calls to our current, recurring customers only scheduling follow ups & recurring services - no cold calls & no sales pressure. Just genuine conversations with people who already know & trust us.

- 10 hours a week, flexible schedule set to what works for you
Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM
- Customer service, sales, or pest control background preferred but not required

Let's clear something up: earwigs do NOT crawl into your ears & lay eggs in your brain... That's an old wives' tale!

What they ARE doing is looking for moisture & dark spaces - think basements, bathrooms, & under mulch near your foundation.

With the humidity we've been having, don't be surprised if you start seeing more of them lately! Humidity brings them out & makes them more likely to wander indoors looking for a cool, damp spot.

While mostly harmless to people, seeing a lot of them can be a sign of excess moisture around your home, & they can still be a nuisance getting into cracks & crevices indoors.

A few tips to keep them out:
🔹 Reduce moisture around your foundation
🔹 Seal up cracks & gaps near doors/windows
🔹 Keep mulch pulled back a few inches from your siding

🚨 WARNING: EVEN BRIEF CONTACT WITH A RABID BAT CAN BE DEADLY 🦇

An 11 year old boy in Ontario woke up with a bat on his face. He swatted it off, his dad let it outside, & since there wasn't a scratch or bite mark to be found, they didn't think twice about it. Almost 3 weeks later, his face went numb, & things moved fast from there. Doctors eventually diagnosed rabies, & sadly, he passed away. (Full article linked below)

Bats aren't something we directly handle at Men in Black since they're considered wildlife, which requires different licensing in Illinois. Through our work in the industry though, we cross paths with wildlife removal companies regularly & the stories they have regarding rabid bats, especially ones involving young kids or a pregnant mom in the home, stick with you. When we saw this news, we felt we had to spread more awareness.

HERE'S WHAT MATTERS TO KNOW FOR EVERY HOUSEHOLD:
- A bat's teeth are so small that a bite or scratch can go completely unnoticed
- A bat will not always look or act sick if it's carrying rabies
- You do NOT need a visible wound to be at risk. Their saliva touching your eyes, nose, mouth, or an open cut is enough on its own
- Once symptoms start, rabies is almost always fatal & there is no cure
- If you get treatment BEFORE symptoms appear, it is highly effective at preventing the disease

If a bat has touched you, your child, or your pet, even briefly, contact your doctor or vet right away & follow whatever they recommend. Don't wait to see if something happens.

Please share this so more people know what to do in this situation. It can save a life.

This is basically every fly in the house ever 🤣

Fun fact: a fly's eyes are like a bunch of low resolution cameras working together which they use to follow motion & light (so the closed door looks exactly the same as the open one to them!)

Q Bar has supported Men In Black for years & when a business continuously shows support the way they do, we want to make sure we show up for them in return.

The Q Bar family is grieving the loss of Jon, a beloved member of their team. A GoFundMe has been established to support his children & family during this incredibly difficult time.

We encourage anyone who is able to donate, share, or simply keep Jon's family in their prayers to do so. Every bit of support makes a difference.
