This timber retaining wall at Georgetown Condominium experienced a major failure. The wall had deadmen installed, but the wood had deteriorated and rotted to the point where the system could no longer hold back the tremendous pressure of the soil behind it.

One of the biggest concerns here is drainage. A retaining wall isn't just what you see from the outside. What’s behind the wall can determine whether it lasts for decades—or eventually ends up like this.

Proper drainage, appropriate backfill, properly designed reinforcement, and quality materials all matter.
