A hidden piece of history was uncovered inside The Fitch House. 👀 These hand-painted murals, believed to have been created during the ownership of GW Hardaway and Mary Hardaway in the early 1900’s were discovered during renovation in 2021. The castle, colonial trumpeter and mysterious “G & M” initials have us wondering: Who painted them and what story were they trying to tell? The brick road in front of The Fitch House isn’t just beautiful, it’s part of Florida history. ✨ These preserved bricks are tied to the original Dixie Highway, the same historic roadway system connected to Florida’s famous “Ghost Road” Old Brick Road. more than 100 years ago, early travelers crossed Florida on roads just like this. Did you know the preserved brick road in front of The Fitch House is tied to Florida’s original Dixie Highway era?

Long before modern highways crossed the state, travelers drove narrow brick roads like these through Old Florida. The famous “Ghost Road” known as the Old Brick Road in Flagler County was once part of this same historic Dixie Highway system that connected travelers from the Midwest all the way to Miami in the early 1900s.

Today, Historic Longwood still preserves sections of these beautiful brick streets, including the roadway in front of The Fitch House at Founder's Square.

It’s a rare piece of living Florida history hiding in plain sight.
