There is a specific kind of frustration in getting a raise and somehow still feeling behind, and this is exactly why.

Say you get a 3% raise this year, and it feels like good news walking out of that meeting. But if inflation ran at 5% over that same stretch, your actual buying power went down, not up, even though the number on your paycheck technically grew. You can afford less than you could a year ago, while holding a bigger salary than you had a year ago. That gap between the number and what it actually buys is where the real story lives, and it rarely gets mentioned in the room where the raise gets handed out.

This is not a rare fluke either. It has played out for a lot of workers over the past several years, where wage growth technically happened on paper, year after year, while the cost of rent, groceries, insurance, and everything else climbed even faster underneath it. The math quietly works against you even while every individual number looks like it is moving in the right direction.

A raise should mean gaining ground. If it does not outpace what things actually cost, it is not really a raise at all. It is just a pay cut wearing better paperwork.

There is something to this that a lot of people do not really think about until later in life, when parents pass and it becomes clear who is actually still showing up.

Siblings carry a kind of history nobody else can replace. They remember the same childhood home, the same holidays, the same inside jokes that only make sense to people who lived it alongside you. When parents are no longer around, siblings often become the anchor, the people who still call, still check in, still show up for birthdays and hard days alike, simply because that bond was built over an entire lifetime, not just a friendship formed later on.

That said, this is really a personal family decision, and it looks different for everyone. Some families have deep, lifelong bonds between siblings. Some do not, for all kinds of reasons that have nothing to do with how many kids were in the house. And plenty of only children build incredibly close relationships with cousins, extended family, or chosen family that fill that same role just as meaningfully. Having siblings is not a guarantee of closeness, and not having them is not a guarantee of being alone.

The real point underneath this is less about a specific number of kids and more about intentionally building connections your children can lean on for the rest of their lives, whatever that family ends up looking like.
