ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL TRAINING IN THE BOOKS! 🎓❤️💙💛🧡

Today, Make It Count Consulting, LLC had the pleasure of facilitating our SECOND professional development training in partnership with Metro United Way! 🙌🏾

Our training, “Pathways to Possibility: Supporting Youth and Families Through College, Career, and Life After High School,” was filled with meaningful conversations, interactive learning, reflection, and so much engagement!

One thing I believe wholeheartedly is that we cannot expect young people to navigate opportunities they've never been exposed to. And as youth-serving professionals, we have a responsibility to help them explore those possibilities without limiting their potential.

Throughout today's training, participants explored different postsecondary pathways, examined real-life student scenarios, discussed barriers that youth and families face, and identified practical ways to better support young people as they prepare for life after high school.

And let me tell you... THE ENGAGEMENT WAS EVERYTHING! 👏🏾👏🏾

From our Pathway Corners activity to our group discussions, participants were actively involved, sharing experiences, challenging perspectives, and learning from one another.

But one of the most meaningful moments for me came when an attendee shared how much she appreciated my storytelling and personal experiences.

I openly discussed some of the challenges I faced growing up, including not knowing exactly what I wanted to do with my future. She shared how she could relate to those experiences and how, as a professional today, she understands the uncertainty that many young people experience.

THAT moment reminded me why I do this work. 🥹❤️

Sometimes our greatest teaching tools aren't just the degrees we've earned or the information we've studied. Sometimes they're the experiences we've lived, the obstacles we've overcome, and our willingness to use those lessons to encourage someone else.

At Make It Count Consulting, we believe professional development should be more than sitting through a presentation. It should be interactive, relatable, thought-provoking, and filled with practical strategies that professionals can take back to the young people and families they serve.

I am incredibly grateful to Metro United Way for this continued partnership and for the opportunity to share my knowledge, experiences, and passion with other youth-serving professionals.

Parents I'm challenging you to:

Ask your child what they want to be when they grow up.

Ask questions, "why do you want to be in that particular field" or "what motivated you to choose that career?"

Ask them their favorite subjects in school and tie it back to their career choice.

If your child is undecided or still saying "I don't know."

Listen, being undecided or NOT knowing is OKAY! ALL I'm asking is to start the conversation with them. You should be aware of your child's passions, gifts, and strengths.

Pay attention. Ask questions. And provide the resources for them to thrive.

Parents: Use these same questions above and report out what your kid(s) shared with you. You will be surprised lol

🎥 NEW SERIES ALERT: FROM THE SUB DESK WITH MISS C!

I’ve been sharing pieces of my journey as a substitute teacher, but in November, I’m taking it a step further.

On Sunday, November 8th, I’m officially launching my new video series:

🍎 FROM THE SUB DESK WITH MISS C

Subbing has given me an opportunity to experience education from a completely different seat.

I’ve been in elementary classrooms, high school classrooms, specialized classrooms, and some classrooms that had me looking at the clock like…surely it has been more than 7 minutes. 😂

But underneath the funny stories are some very REAL conversations that I believe we need to have.

As someone with over 15 years of experience working with youth and a Master's in School Counseling, I don't just walk away from these classrooms thinking about what happened.

I find myself asking:

🧠 What was that behavior communicating?

📚 What happens when students are significantly behind academically?

❤️ Are we teaching children how to regulate their emotions—or only responding once they lose control?

👩🏾‍🏫 What can we learn when we look at the classroom through a different lens?

And most importantly...

How can we better support our students AND the people serving them?

That's what From the Sub Desk is about.

I'll share real experiences from substitute teaching while bringing in the SEL, youth-development, and school-counseling lens that has shaped the work I already do through Make It Count Consulting.

We'll laugh.
We'll probably shake our heads a few times. 🤦🏾‍♀️
But we're also going to LEARN and have some conversations that matter.

Last week, I facilitated my first session with Elevate Louisville at The Academy @ Shawnee. ❤️💙💛

I’ll have the opportunity to work with these students for a total of 8 weeks, and during our first session, I asked them one important question:

“What does your future look like 10 years from now?”

And let’s be real...

For some students, that wasn’t an easy question to answer.

Some struggled to draw or write what they saw for themselves because sometimes, when you’re dealing with the challenges directly in front of you, it can be difficult to imagine what life could look like beyond them.

And honestly, I think a lot of us can relate to that.

It’s hard to dream about tomorrow when today already feels heavy.

But that’s exactly why spaces like this matter.

Our young people need opportunities to DREAM again. They need people who remind them that their current circumstances do not have to define their future. They need encouragement, exposure, support, and a mindset strong enough to say:

“I may not know exactly how I’m going to get there yet, but I believe I can.”

After some conversation, encouragement, and reflection, the ideas started coming.

Careers. Families. Homes. Success. Stability. Happiness. ❤️

They completed an activity called “Build Your Future,” and watching them give themselves permission to imagine what their lives could become was one of my favorite parts of the session.

Even if they only allowed themselves to dream for a little while that day...

They dreamed.

And over these next 8 weeks, my goal is to help them keep building from there. 💛
