The Gloucester Police Department recently participated in a professional defensive tactics training session held in Marblehead focused on practical control techniques, de-escalation strategies, officer safety, and reducing unnecessary force through real-world, scenario-based instruction.

Participating officers included Officer Jared Lopez, Sgt. James Marshall, Sgt. Michal Cimoszko, Officer Keith Gaudenzi, Officer Dylan Morrissey, Officer Anthony Trupiano, and Officer Dylan Snell of the Gloucester Police Department; Sgt. Kevin Reen and Officer Sanchez of the Swampscott Police Department; Sgt. Robert Wheway of the Essex Police Department; and Officer Dylan Forss of the Barre Police Department.

Instruction was provided by Liam McGeown of First Colony Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Matthew Christensen of Calm in Chaos, Sergeant Kevin Reen and Officer Jared Lopez.

The training emphasized safe, effective, and policy-aligned approaches to managing high-stress encounters while continuing to build officer confidence, professionalism, and decision-making skills.

The Gloucester Police Department appreciates the continued commitment of our officers to ongoing professional development and training that enhances both officer and community safety.

Today’s P.A.C.T Seminar was a huge success. CiC offers this absolutely free seminar to active law enforcement officers every 8 weeks. Stay tuned for the next one!!

Officers from Gloucester, Essex, Swampscott, and Barre came together to sharpen real-world control techniques, improve decision-making under stress, and build confidence through hands-on training. From positional control and team communication to practical defensive tactics, every rep mattered.

Police Applied Control Techniques

Thank you to every officer who showed up on their personal time ready to work, learn, and push themselves. The willingness to train today is what helps keep both officers and communities safer tomorrow.

Stay ready. Stay capable.

Spring means three things:

🌱 Reconfirming rifle zeros
🎯 Taking up way too many lanes at the range
🧼 Realizing gun cleaning is a full-time seasonal hobby

Because nothing says “warmer weather” like chasing groups, burning ammo, and finding carbon in places you didn’t know existed.

Check your optics. Verify your holds. Confirm your gear. Winter storage and hard use can shift things more than people think.

And remember… the rifle isn’t dirty until the cleaning patches stop coming out black after patch #47. 😅

Sometimes the fight doesn’t go how you planned.

You run dry. The rifle goes down. Something breaks.

That’s where the transition matters.

Getting from rifle to pistol isn’t just a “cool guy” move—it’s about staying in the fight when seconds count. In many cases, it’s faster and more reliable to transition to your sidearm than to diagnose and fix a malfunction under pressure.

Train it until it’s automatic. Smooth, efficient, and deliberate.

Because when things go wrong…
you don’t rise to the occasion—you fall to your level of training.

Off-body carry in a f***y pack or sling bag—convenient, but not foolproof.

Pros:
Easy concealment, quick on/off, works with gym clothes or summer wear, and can be more comfortable than waistband carry.

Cons:
Slower access under stress, easier to forget or set down, and that bag must stay on your body and under your control at all times—no exceptions.

Train how you carry. Not how you wish you carried.
