Woodlands and Wood-fired Pizza

Join fellow woodland enthusiasts for an evening of conversation, connection and wood-fired pizza hosted by Vermont Coverts Cooperator Len Schmidt and Jennie Masterson. Len and Jennie will host County Forester Mark Raishart, who works with landowners northern Rutland and southern Addison Counties. We will talk about forests, share woodland stories, answer questions and explore a variety of topics which might include forest management, wildlife observations, habitat connectivity, invasive species, and/or the current use program. We will see where the conversation takes us. We'll provide wood-fired pizza and some drinks. Feel free to bring your choice of beverages and plan to connect about the woodlands and wildlife in our region. Learn to Identify Plants Using iNaturalist In-Person

With apps like iNaturalist, Seek, and PictureThis, your smartphone can be a powerful tool for decoding the natural world. Simply snap a few photos of an organism, and the app will analyze them to generate identification suggestions. While it sounds simple, common mistakes can lead to incorrect identifications. It takes practice and skill to use these tools effectively. In this workshop, led by iNaturalist Ambassador Robin Andresen, you will learn how to take high-quality photos of plants, gain tips for navigating auto-generated suggestions and get hands-on practice identifying plants using iNaturalist. Come prepared to spend a short time outside and bring a charged smart device with the iNaturalist app already downloaded. Morgan Area Butterfly Blitz

Scientists want to know what kind of butterflies live in Vermont. Join a team from the Vermont Center for Ecostudies and the NorthWoods Stewardship Center for a day of butterflying near Morgan. Meet other nature lovers and learn about butterflies in the field with the experts. No experience necessary—just an interest in butterflies! All ages welcome, but minors must be accompanied by an adult. We will travel in groups to various sites in the Morgan, Derby, Charleston, and Brighton. There will be options for low intensity (minimal walking) or medium intensity (1–3 miles). Learn more and register here:

Tending Your Forest: A presentation by co-author Paul Catanzaro

Join the Dummerston Conservation Commission and Windham Regional Woodlands Association as they host forester, professor, author Paul Catanzaro for a discussion on his new book cowritten with UVM Professor in Silviculture & Forest Ecology. Paul serves as the MA State Extension Forester, Co-directs the Family Forest Research Center, runs the Keystone (Coverts Program) and teaches Forest Ecology and Conservation at the University of Massachusetts. This program is meant for both woodland owners and everyone else in the community who cares about ecological forest management. This program is free. Donations are appreciated.

Kids ages 5 and older will learn about the black bears that live in Vermont through activities, stories, movements, and song. While adults will learn about Living with Black Bears in a presentation covering bear behaviors, methods to minimize conflict, technology in place to protect both the bears and your property, and an opportunity for Q&A.
