As we have mentioned, JATCO, Incorporated, has deep knowledge of selecting correct materials for specific applications. Fire-retardant materials play a critical role in modern injection molding—especially in industries where safety, compliance, and reliability are non-negotiable.

From electrical housings and automotive components to medical devices and consumer electronics, many molded products must meet strict flame-resistance standards to reduce fire risks and improve user safety.

Common products requiring fire-retardant plastics:
• Electrical connectors & switchgear
• EV battery components
• Appliance housings
• Medical equipment enclosures
• Aerospace & transportation parts
• Industrial control systems
• Consumer electronics

Common fire-retardant materials used in injection molding:
• Flame-retardant ABS
• Polycarbonate (PC) blends
• Nylon (PA6/PA66) with FR additives
• PBT & PET engineering resins
• PPS and PEI for high-temperature applications
• Halogen-free flame-retardant compounds

These specialized materials are designed to meet standards like UL 94 while maintaining mechanical strength, durability, and processability.

As products become more electrified and compact, the demand for advanced fire-retardant injection molded materials continues to grow—helping manufacturers balance performance, safety, and compliance.

Name This Product?

We are playing this game again.

Last week we asked you to Name That Product. We gave clues that it is deployed at resorts around the world to stop hazardous events from occurring. Well, this device is used for avalanche control. It is fired into snow banks to bring about controlled avalanches. The goal is to release unstable snow thus preventing larger, unpredictable avalanches from occurring.

The new product in question is used as a calming agent and can be purchased anywhere in the United States. It is overmolded in two different materials, one rigid and one that is pliable like rubber. Please feel free to email [email protected] with your ideas on what this is.

Name That Product?

With plastic injection molding, you never know what might come through the door. JATCO, Incorporated, is a Custom, Plastic Injection Molder. This means that we are not “captive” to a particular industry. For 50 years, we have been engineering and molding components for electronics, agriculture, toys, recreation, sports, automotive, solar, medical, housewares, construction industries and much more.

Today we are playing a game of Name That Product. Hint: This product is deployed at resorts around the world to stop hazardous events from occurring. No, it is not a warning system and is not used in safe rooms. It is shot from a cannon-like device. Feel free to message us with your guesses. We will unveil its use next week.

Potential customers contact JATCO, Incorporated, for a range of custom plastic injection molding needs, especially when off-the-shelf solutions will not cut it. Companies often reach out to us when they require custom-designed parts, whether for new product development or improving an existing component for better performance, durability, or cost efficiency.

We are your plastic injection molding go-to partner for engineering support—from part and mold design guidance for material selection and manufacturability optimization. 04/09/2026

Exemplary part design for plastic injection molded parts is paramount to success in our industry. To bring efficiencies and lower costs of manufacturing injection molded components, we often design them for Automated Part Removal. Automation in injection molding is not just about robotics. It begins with smart part design. Automation cuts labor and costs.

To ensure smooth, reliable automated part removal, engineers and industrial designers must consider:

Draft Angles:
Proper draft allows parts to release cleanly from the mold, reducing the risk of sticking or deformation during ejection.

Part Geometry:
Avoid deep ribs, undercuts, or complex features that can interfere with robotic gripping or cause hang-ups on the mold.

Ejection Strategy:
Design with consistent, flat surfaces for ejector pins or plates to push parts out evenly this preventing warping or damage.

Material Selection:
Some resins shrink or cling more than others. Choosing the right material helps ensure predictable release and handling.

Grip Points for Robotics:
Incorporate features that allow end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) to reliably grab and remove parts without dropping or misalignment.

The Bottom Line:
Designing with automation in mind reduces cycle time, minimizes labor, improves part consistency, and leads to a more scalable and cost-efficient process.

We are experts at part design, and architecting means to increase automation. Our Secondary Operations Team are well versed in designing end-of-arm tooling for specific applications and automation processes. Do not rely on other molders who do not provide up-front recommendations on product design. We go the extra mile to ensure your injection molding opportunity is a success.

03/26/2026

The biggest investment a customer makes in our industry, plastic injection molding, is in the initial cost of their mold. Once a customer’s mold is in our possession, we develop a planned maintenance schedule to ensure that we get the longest life possible out of their investment.

When a mold gets close to end-of-life, there are ways to extend its life by doing some of the following:
• Polish or re-texture surfaces
• Replace worn components
• Re-machine damaged areas
• Rework cooling channels

Ultimately a decision will need to be made to replace it. So, what factors drive the complete replacement of a mold?

One rule to follow is If the mold can still produce in-spec parts reliably and cheaply, then refurbish the mold. If not, then replace it.

A mold must be replaced if one of the following items occur:
Structural failure:
• Cracks in core or cavity
• Warped mold plates
• Repeated breakdowns

Excessive wear across the mold:
• Flash everywhere
• Drifting out of tolerance
• Surface finish damaged

Cooling system failure:
• Blocked channels
• Uneven cooling

Design changes
• New product version
• Geometry changes

Production demand increased:
• Requires harder steel
• Millions of cycles

Refurbishment cost is too high:
• If repair cost ≥ 50–70% of new mold

JATCO, Incorporated, is celebration its 50th anniversary of operations this year. We offer complete fulfillment services, and we partner with our customers to ensure success.
