The Protect College Sports Act, an historic bill that would federalize many aspects of college sports, moved one step closer to passage this week by clearing the Senate in a 77-22 vote. The legislation next moves to the House
The Act aims to establish a more stable and uniform framework for college athletics at a time of unprecedented change. It seeks to create national standards governing many of the issues that have increasingly been shaped by courts rather than by a single set of uniformly applicable rules.
Those issues include athletics eligibility, name, image and likeness rights, revenue sharing, and transfer rules among many others. Other issues addressed by the Senate version of the Act include scholarship protections, academic freedom, preservation of non-revenue sports, and international recruiting.
