The jersey says RECRUITER #1, but here’s something I’ve learned over the years.

𝐍𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞, 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍!

Your title doesn’t mean you have all the answers. Your experience doesn’t mean there’s nothing left to learn. And being the loudest person in the room certainly doesn’t make you the wisest!

Sometimes the greatest lessons come when you stop talking and start listening.

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐞. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞.

Because there’s always something you can learn from somebody!

Hey, hey, y’all! It’s Tenesha!

Happy Thursday!

Today’s T is 𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗘.

Some people don’t have a communication problem. They have a DELIVERY problem.

Have you ever heard someone say, “Well, that’s just how I talk”?

But here’s the question: Does that make the delivery acceptable?

Whether we’re communicating with colleagues, leading teams, or navigating difficult conversations, how we deliver a message matters just as much as what we’re saying.

You can be knowledgeable, experienced, and absolutely RIGHT, but your tone can cause people to stop listening before you’ve even finished speaking.

𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦𝗡’𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗟 𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗧.

You may not intend to sound dismissive, disrespectful, or frustrated, but that doesn’t mean your message wasn’t received that way.

And before we label someone as “too sensitive,” perhaps we should consider whether our delivery could have been better.

This is especially important in leadership.

People should feel respected enough to ask questions, share ideas, and have honest conversations without worrying about how they’ll be spoken to.

Here’s my challenge for today:

Before you defend your intention, consider your impact.

And here’s a question for my network:

Have you ever had to apologize for your TONE, even though your MESSAGE was right?

I’ll be the first to acknowledge that this is an area where we can all continue growing.

🎖️ SKILLBRIDGE IS NOT YOUR TRANSITION PLAN. IT IS ONE PART OF IT.

I want transitioning service members to hear this clearly.

Getting accepted into a SkillBridge program does not mean the rest of your transition planning stops.

While completing a Lowe’s 12-week SkillBridge fellowship, you should still be preparing for life after military service.

That means:

✅ Updating your civilian resume
✅ Building your LinkedIn network
✅ Practicing your interview skills
✅ Understanding your financial transition
✅ Researching where you want to live
✅ Building relationships inside your fellowship organization
✅ Continuing your job search

Lowe’s SkillBridge opportunities may be available in Store Leadership, Supply Chain Operations, and select Corporate areas based on business needs and location availability.

Use the fellowship to gain experience.

Use your transition plan to build options.

The goal is not simply to complete SkillBridge.

The goal is to leave military service prepared for what comes next.

Keep building your runway.

Hey, hey, y’all! It’s Tenesha!

Now, I was sitting under that hair dryer getting my hair together, and I got to thinking. Sometimes we need to get a few other things together too! 😂

TONGUE. TONE. TIMING.

Because listen, you can have the right message, but if you deliver it with the wrong tone at the wrong time, baby, you’ve already lost your audience!

And before we start pointing fingers at everybody else, sometimes we need to check ourselves!

That’s what this is about.

A little inspiration, a little accountability, and a whole lot of growth!

So here’s my challenge for you this week.

Before you speak, ask yourself three things:

Does it need to be said?
Does it need to be said like THAT?
And does it need to be said RIGHT NOW?

Now tell me, which of your 3 T’s needs the most work?

And don’t be shy, because we’re ALL still growing! 💜

My Calendar Needs a Vacation! 😂

Baby, at this point, I need to schedule some time to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! 😂🥴

Between work, traveling, family, business, and everything else life throws at me, somebody needs to explain why my calendar has more plans than I do!

And don’t let me get a free weekend because I’ll turn around and book something else! 🤣✈️

But here’s what I’m learning.

𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐃𝐎 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐋 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐀 𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐊 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐃𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐓! ❤️

Every free moment doesn’t need to become another opportunity to be productive.

Sometimes I just want good food, good company, a little shopping, and NOBODY asking me what’s next! 😂

𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲!

Jo Bass said it during the 2026 San Diego Military Summit, and I hope every recruiter and hiring leader heard her!

Think about how much talent we pass over simply because someone’s experience doesn’t look like what we’re used to seeing.

A transitioning service member may have spent 20 years leading people, managing operations, solving problems, and making decisions under pressure. Yet somehow, we’re questioning their qualifications because their military job title doesn’t match our civilian job description.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿!

Have the conversation. Ask about their experience. Understand what they actually bring to the table.

And service members, this goes both ways! You have to be able to explain your experience and connect it to what employers need.

We can’t afford to keep overlooking good talent because we don’t recognize how their experience translates.

Hiring leaders, are we really identifying talent, or are we just checking boxes?

𝐆𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭! 🎯

Whether it’s a new opportunity, a promotion, a career change, or simply wanting more for yourself, you have to be willing to go after it.

Everybody won’t see your vision. Everybody won’t understand your decisions. And everybody won’t support your next move.

That’s okay!

But here’s something I’ve learned over the years.

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟.

Speak up. Apply for the opportunity. Have the conversation. Make the connection.

You may not get every opportunity you pursue, but you’ll never know what’s possible if you don’t try.

𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! 🇺🇸

Listen, I work with transitioning service members, and there’s something I want y’all to understand.

𝗡𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗬𝗢𝗨!

DoW SkillBridge can be a great opportunity, but don’t apply to a fellowship just because somebody has an opening.

Here are 𝗙𝗜𝗩𝗘 reasons to explore an approved industry provider:

1️⃣ 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿. Find out whether the industry and position are right for you.

2️⃣ 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼. Your military experience matters, but you have to help employers understand your value.

3️⃣ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. Meet people, ask questions, and make connections before you need a job.

4️⃣ 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. A fellowship is NOT a guaranteed job offer. Keep your options open.

5️⃣ 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣! Research your opportunities, understand your branch’s requirements, communicate with your command, and follow through.

Now, let me say this, too.

𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀!

They should provide meaningful training, clear expectations, and honest conversations about employment possibilities.

Service members, ask about the training plan, mentorship, and how previous fellows have done after completing the program.

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗢𝗧𝗛 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀!

And remember, just because someone is willing to help you doesn’t mean they’re responsible for doing the work for you.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿.

Let me put something on my recruiting friends’ radar! 👀

DFAS. Yes, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service!

When we’re searching for Accounting and Finance talent, why aren’t we talking more about this talent pool?

There are veterans, military spouses, and other military-affiliated professionals with experience in financial reporting, reconciliations, auditing, compliance, and financial operations.

And guess what? Some of them are exactly the kind of talent corporate America is looking for!

Now, every candidate won’t be a match for every position. We know that. But let’s not assume someone can’t make the transition just because their experience comes from the federal sector.

The skills don’t suddenly become less valuable because the employer is different.

I’m just saying, sometimes we need to expand where we’re looking instead of saying we can’t find the talent. 😉
