We need to talk about that résumé.

If you are sending the exact same résumé to five completely different jobs…

That résumé is doing too much. 😂

Your experience does not change.

But what you emphasize should.

If one role focuses on leadership, show leadership.

If another focuses on operations, show operations.

If another requires project management, make that experience easy to find.

Recruiters should not have to hunt for the connection.

Make your résumé answer one question quickly: Why are you a fit for THIS job?

When someone asks what kind of job you are looking for and you say:

“I’m open to anything.”

Please know what happens next.

Nothing. 😭

People cannot help you if they do not know what you want.

You do not need your entire career figured out.

But give people a direction.

Operations.
Supply chain.
Cybersecurity.
Project management.
Human resources.
Skilled trades.

Something.

Clarity makes it easier for your network to recognize opportunities for you.

Transitioning service members, get you some FaceTime.

And I don’t mean sending 100 connection requests on LinkedIn.

I mean getting in the room.

Let recruiters hear your story.
Let hiring leaders learn what you can do.
Let people put a face, personality and conversation behind the resume.

Because when your name comes across their desk later, you don’t want them thinking:

“Who is this?”

You want them thinking:

“I remember them.”

That is the part of networking people do not talk about enough.

Not just the title.

Not just the salary.

Not the first three bullet points.

The whole thing.

Ask yourself:

Do I meet most of the qualifications?

Can I explain how my experience connects?

Am I actually interested in this work?

Is the location realistic?

Because clicking Apply takes seconds.

But a good application should make sense.

Your goal is not to be an applicant. Your goal is to be a strong candidate.

Applying to 75 jobs is not a strategy.

Especially when half of them have nothing to do with your experience.

More applications do not automatically equal more opportunities.

A better approach:

Know what you are targeting.
Understand the qualifications.
Tailor your résumé.
Use your network.
Apply with intention.

Because if your job search strategy is:

“Let me just apply and see what happens…”
