A few days ago, Stephanie Schumacher, CAMS, RIMS-CRMP, our Global Risk Advisor at SightSpan, represented SightSpan at Socure ConnectOS in Nashville.

The event brought together representatives from approximately 30 sponsor banks for collaborative discussions on BD and risk partnerships, shared goals, the regulatory landscape, technology, what makes best-in-class programs, and common challenges facing sponsor banks.

Stephanie spoke on two panels.

The first, with Brenda Banks of Socure, Pam Perdue of Cosmic Collaborations, and Justin Muscolino of Fintech Training Center, focused on what makes a sponsor bank program stand out.

The second, with Brian Cohan of Socure, Erica Baumbach, of First Electronic Bank, and Many Goettelman of Green Dot, focused on managing a fintech relationship that has multiple bank partners.

When the same compliance issue keeps coming back, it's worth looking beyond the immediate problem.

✔️ You fix the issue.
✔️ The review is closed.
✔️ Then months later, the same or a similar issue appears again.

That can be a sign that the underlying cause was never fully addressed.

The focus shouldn't only be on correcting the immediate issue. It should also be on understanding:

• Why did it happen?

• Was the process itself part of the problem?

• Who is responsible for making sure the issue stays resolved?

• Is the corrective action actually working?

A finding is closed on paper, but that doesn't always mean the underlying risk has been addressed.

Effective remediation should leave the organization with a stronger process, clearer accountability, and less likelihood of the same issue returning.

Not every risk needs to be treated the same way.

Some risks need immediate action.

Some need stronger controls.

Some can be monitored.

And some may be accepted because the cost of eliminating them is greater than the potential impact.

✅ The important question is: what response makes sense for this particular risk?

That means looking at the likelihood of the risk occurring, the potential impact on the business, and the controls already in place.

Because treating every risk as a priority can be just as unhelpful as overlooking one.

The real work is deciding where your attention and resources are needed most.
