Why does your propane tank gauge never read 100% full? It all comes down to safety.

Propane is stored as a liquid and expands when temperatures rise. That is why propane tanks are typically filled to about 80% of their capacity, leaving the remaining 20% as room for expansion.

For example, a 500-gallon propane tank holds about 400 gallons when filled to the recommended 80% level. The fuel itself does not increase or decrease with temperature. Instead, its density changes as it expands and contracts.

The 80/20 rule also explains why propane tanks should never be painted a dark color. Dark surfaces absorb more heat from the sun, which can increase the temperature of the tank and the propane inside.

So, the next time you see your propane gauge at 80%, remember that it is not underfilled. That space is an important part of keeping your propane system operating safely.
