Before you hire another person, get clear on what the business needs.

As a company grows, roles can evolve around the people already in the room instead of around the work the business requires. That’s when ownership gets blurry, decisions circle back to the CEO, and delegation creates more work instead of more capacity.

People strategy starts with the structure.

Define the work. Define the ownership. Then find the right person for the role.

Good strategy doesn’t remove uncertainty. It gives you a stronger foundation for making decisions inside of it.

That’s what we’re building with our clients: a business they understand deeply, decisions they can stand behind, and a foundation strong enough to support what comes next.

Julia Jaksic of Cafe Roze said it beautifully.

Your business is unique. The problems inside of it are less unique than they feel.

Eight years of studying and working alongside growing small businesses has given us a body of work we can learn from. We can see patterns across businesses at similar stages, recognize inflection points, and know where to start asking better questions.

That doesn’t give us a formula. It gives us context.

Because experience isn’t knowing the answer before we begin. It’s knowing what to look for.

Growth was already happening. The question was how to capture it well.

For this 6-person marketing agency, that meant looking beyond top-line revenue and strengthening the business underneath it. Product & Pricing, Marketing, and People weren’t separate conversations. Each decision created a cascading effect across the business.

The result? 38% more revenue with 93% of the clients, stronger pricing, clearer offers, and a business built to rely less on its owner.

This is what it looks like when growth is supported by strategy.

The “what” gets us in the room. The “how” is where the real work happens.

It’s knowing which questions to ask, what to look at, and how the pieces of the business connect.

That’s the difference between giving advice and doing strategy.

Revenue is a fact. What we do with that fact is where strategy begins.

When we understand what each client, project, or product actually contributes to the business, we can make better decisions about what to grow, what to change, and where our time is most valuable.

Start with five. Do the math. Then pay attention to what confirms what you already knew and what changes the way you see your business.

Growth doesn't remove problems.

It changes them.

Early in business, the questions are often about generating demand.

How do I get more business?
How do I make more money?

As the business grows, the questions evolve.

How do we protect profitability?

Who do we need to hire?

Do we have the capacity to grow well?

Every stage of business requires a different strategy because every stage introduces new constraints, new opportunities, and new decisions.

The goal isn't to reach a point where there are no problems to solve.

The goal is to keep solving the right problems for the business you're building today.

Having new problems to solve isn't a sign something is wrong.

It's evidence your business has evolved.

What worked yesterday won't automatically work tomorrow.

A strategy can be successful and still need to change.

Businesses evolve. Markets shift. Customer expectations change. New opportunities emerge. Strong leaders recognize when it's time to revisit their assumptions and ask better questions.

Strategy isn't a one-time project.

It's a practice.

The businesses that continue to grow continually evaluate what's changing around them and ask whether their strategy still supports where they're want to go.

A strong strategy has an evergreen foundation, but it should be renewed as your business evolves.

Because what got you here won't get you there.

Businesses don't outgrow strategy.

They outgrow the strategy that got them here.

Every stage of growth asks new questions, introduces new constraints, and requires new decisions.

That's why strategy isn't something you complete.

It's something you revisit.

Refine.

Renew.

Execute.

Repeat.

Because businesses evolve—and strategy should evolve with them.

Business owners don't stop solving problems as they grow.

The problems simply change.

Early on, the questions are about gaining traction.

Later, they're about building leaders, creating capacity, strengthening systems, and preparing the business for what's next.

That's why strategy is never finished.

Growth isn't the absence of problems.

It's the opportunity to solve better ones.
