25 Years of Remembrance – The Thirtymile Fire

July 10, 2026, marks 25 years since the tragic Line of Duty Deaths at the Thirtymile Fire near Winthrop, Washington. On that day in 2001, West Valley Firefighter Jessica Johnson lost her life alongside fellow wildland firefighters Tom Craven, Devin Weaver, and Karen FitzPatrick while battling a rapidly advancing fire in a narrow canyon far from home.

Jessica was a dedicated volunteer firefighter whose commitment to service exemplified the very best of the fire service. The loss of these four firefighters forever changed wildland firefighting in the United States. In the aftermath of the Thirtymile Fire, critical improvements were made to firefighter safety, leadership accountability, training, and fireline decision-making—changes that continue to protect firefighters 25 years later.

Today, we pause to honor their courage, remember their sacrifice, and reaffirm our commitment to learning from the past so that future tragedies may be prevented.

Their legacy endures.
They will never be forgotten.
