A calendar note nobody sends owners: Visa and Mastercard adjust pricing twice a year, and the next wave lands mid October, no announcement.

Prepare in September: circle interchange, assessments, processor markup, PCI, and the junk drawer of batch and annual fees. A different company sets each line. When October lands, compare, and you will know exactly who to call. Ten minutes now saves a confusing call later.

For the market stall and pop-up crowd: Tap to Pay lets an iPhone take cards directly. Nothing to buy, nothing to lose.

Two things first. The money still routes through a provider at that provider's normal rate, so the phone collects, but not for free.

And a phone cannot print receipts, hold cash or close the day. Phone for the table, terminal for the register.

For everyone selling to offices and caterers: if your statement crept up in January, here is the likely answer. Visa retired the Level 2 discount on Small Business credit cards on Jan 24,
roughly three quarters of a point more per business card swipe.

No memo comes when a network discount goes away. Compare December and February statements. If the jump lives in business cards, it was the network, not your terminal.

Heads up for anyone with a cash drawer. The last pennies were minted in November, so registers are adjusting: cash rounds to the nearest 5 cents after tax, cards stay exact. Same $19.83 check can be $19.85 in cash or $19.83 by card, both correct.

About 20 states are writing rounding into law. The practical question: can your POS round cash and print that line? If not, your cashier does the math by hand. Worth a five minute check.

For anyone who saw the $38 billion Visa and Mastercard settlement headlines and felt relief coming: the math from behind one register. The deal trims rates 0.10 of a point. A shop doing $50k a month gets back about $600 a year. The same year, Square, Clover and Toast each raised fees by more than that.

Not sharing to be gloomy. Sharing because waiting for courts or Congress is the most expensive plan on the menu. The relief that actually shows up is the kind you negotiate yourself, and that starts with knowing your effective rate. Hope it saves someone a phone call.

One for everyone, not just owners. If you always pay cash thinking you skip the card fees, the fees are already inside the price. Most businesses fold 2 to 3 percent of card costs into everything, and retail groups estimate the average family pays about $1,200 a year this way without ever seeing it.

Stranger still, researchers estimate cash and debit users end up subsidizing billions in other people's credit card rewards. The system works best for whoever sees it clearly, which is most of why we keep posting about it.

Small thing most guests never know. When someone tips $10 on a card, that tip gets processed like the rest of the bill. About 25 to 35 cents of toll, usually eaten by the house, on money that was never the restaurant's to keep. Same for the sales tax you collect for the state, full rate on the way through.

Illinois passed the first law against charging fees on tax and tips. It keeps getting delayed, now to 2027. Until that changes, it is worth knowing how much of your volume is pass-through, because you pay rate on all of it. Sharing because most owners have never had anyone point at those lines.

A number worth sitting with. On a $50 dinner paid by card, the payments side takes about $1.65. A restaurant running a healthy 5 percent margin keeps about 85 cents of that same check.

The companies that moved the money made almost twice what the kitchen kept. Zoomed out, swipe fees hit a record $198 billion last year, and for spots living on 3 to 6 percent margins, processing is basically a second rent.

One thing worth doing this week: add up every fee on last month's statement and divide by your card sales. That single number tells you more than most reports. Hope it helps someone here.
