Founded by Alexander DĂaz Andersson Alexander Diaz and based between Mexico City, New York City and Los Angeles, ATRA is a design and architecture studio that takes projects from first sketch to completion at every scale, from a single chair to a full building. DĂaz Andersson was raised in Sweden, studied industrial design in Madrid and learned furniture making in his family’s factory on the Yucatán Peninsula. He opened a small carpentry workshop in 2008 and founded ATRA in 2014. His Swedish-Mexican background defines the work: minimal, sculptural forms in wood, stone, steel and upholstery, engineered with precision and built to last for generations.
The architecture and interiors practice brings the same rigor to buildings and spaces, with work grounded in the geography and culture of each site. The studio focuses on high-end residential and boutique hospitality projects, with a specialty in custom millwork and furniture. Alongside vintage pieces and clients’ own collections, ATRA develops custom-made solutions for private and public spaces, so that each interior is specific to the people who live in it. The interiors play with form and volume and draw on neo-futurist architecture and parametric design, whether the project is a Malibu villa or a New York loft, while remaining contemporary and timeless. Every project is designed around the client’s lifestyle, with close attention to detail and circulation.
In 2024, ATRA received the Prix Versailles for restaurant design for ILIS in New York, presented at UNESCO in Paris. ATRA 2100, the studio’s ongoing study of how we might live 100 years from now, won Best in Show for Curio at Design Miami in 2021. ATRA has also presented at Salone del Mobile Milan, Nomad Capri, Zona Maco and Unique Design x Mexico City.
