I'd love to know: What's been the hardest part of building your speaking business? šŸ‘‡

You can have the message.
You can have the expertise.
You can even have the stage presence.

But if you don't have the right business strategy, you'll likely stay underpaid, overlooked, and overworked.

This Thursday inside Public Speaking Office Hours, we're diving into the business side of speaking with Vernice "FlyGirl" Armour and Fearless Team Member Ben Pelteson.

Together, we'll explore:

✨ How to command premium fees based on the transformation you create
✨ What speaker bureaus are really looking for
✨ How to position yourself beyond competing on price
✨ How to stay relevant and in demand as markets evolve

After becoming America's first Black female combat pilot, VEE didn't just build a speaking career—she built a resilient, multi-faceted business that has stood the test of time.

And that's exactly what we'll be unpacking.

Public Speaking Office Hours isn't a webinar.
It's not a sales pitch.

It's a collaborative space where speakers, authors, executives, and thought leaders come together to ask questions, share insights, and grow their impact.

You've got the passion. The message. Maybe even a few talks under your belt. ✨

But here's the truth bomb: passion doesn't pay premium fees.

This Thursday, we're fixing that at our FREE PUBLIC SPEAKING OFFICE HOURS!

America's first Black female combat pilot, Hall of Fame speaker, and business powerhouse is joining Public Speaking Office Hours to show you EXACTLY how she turned her story into a thriving speaking empire.

We're diving into:
āœ… How to command premium fees (and actually GET them)
āœ… What speaker bureaus really want (spoiler: it's not what you think)
āœ… Positioning yourself so you STOP competing on price
āœ… Staying relevant when your industry shifts every 6 months

This isn't a lecture. It's a conversation. A co-creation space where speakers show up fully present to connect, reflect, and BREAK THROUGH.

šŸ“… THIS THURSDAY | šŸ• NOON ET šŸŽ¤ Guest: Vernice "FlyGirl" Armour hosted by Fearless Team Member, Ben Pelteson.

The best speakers aren’t just choosing the right words—they’re choosing the right sounds.

Since time immemorial, humans have used rhetorical devices to make stories stick. Easy to receive. Easy to repeat. Easy to remember.

And that’s where I get to step in like a middle school English teacher for a moment and talk about ALLITERATION.

Alliteration is what makes a message move from something people hear… to something people can’t forget.

Here’s a quick reminder:
Alliteration repeats consonant sounds at the beginning of words. Even Martin Luther King Jr. used it with intentionā€”ā€œā€¦not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.ā€
Those repeating sounds aren’t accidental. That’s craft.

In leadership communication, this becomes powerful.

We saw this with a client talk we worked on: ā€œFrom Fired to Forbes.ā€
That opening alone carries sound and structure—the F sound creating a thread your ear can follow.

Throughout the talk, that same sound motif shows up:
→ ā€œfired actually meant I was freeā€
→ ā€œfreedom to flyā€
→ ā€œfind your purposeā€

Even consonance (alliteration’s cousin—repeated consonant sounds within words) shows up in phrases like:
→ ā€œburning through my savings and maxing out credit cardsā€
→ ā€œslide and glideā€

Why does this matter for leadership communication?

Because alliteration creates cohesion. It makes language feel intentional, crafted, designed.

It’s the difference between a talk that sounds good… and a talk that soars.

Here’s what I know:
The speakers who move people aren’t just smart. They’re sonic. They understand that communication isn’t only intellectual—it’s sensory. And sound is one of your most powerful tools.

Try this:
Take your opening line in your next presentation, pitch, or high-stakes meeting and read it out loud.

Ask yourself: What sound patterns am I creating? Are they making my message more memorable?

I stood in a very long line at a professional conference today.

Not for a keynote speaker. Not for a headshot. Not even for free food.

FOR PUPPIES!!!!!

At the Conference Expo, they created a ā€œPuppy Puddleā€ experience. And the line? Absolutely packed. Professionals in business attire, patiently waiting their turn to sit on the floor and pet puppies.

There’s an old theater saying: ā€œNever do a scene with a dog or a child—they’ll steal the whole show.ā€

Turns out, it’s true at conferences too.

From touching puppies, I got dopamine (reward), oxytocin (bonding), serotonin (happiness), and endorphins (natural high). Basically, puppy therapy is biochemically valid.

Worth every minute of that line.

The puppies are named after spices. The black one I’m holding is Pepper and the one in my lap is Adobo.

That’s it.

May these puppies bring you joy on this Wednesday. 🐾

You’re welcome.

At conference, I’ve been thinking about visibility.

Not stage visibility.
Not keynote visibility.
Not workshop leader, breakout session, mic-in-hand visibility.

A different kind.

This is my first ATD conference, and I didn’t fully know what I was walking into. The scale, the energy, the sheer number of people — 10,000 humans. It’s a lot.

I’m not shy, but I am an ambivert, and events like this can be both energizing and depleting.

So I’ve been noticing what helps.

I chose to wear conversation starters that felt aligned with me, my brand, and my personality. And people responded to that. So many humans came up to me and sparked conversation.

And they couldn’t even see my blue socks with orange foxes.

It reminded me that standing out doesn’t always mean speaking louder.

Sometimes it means being more you on purpose.

A color. A pattern. A detail. An energy. A small signal that says: this is me, and you’re welcome to engage.

I’ve been thinking of these as micro gestures. Invitations for connection. Ways of being visible that don’t require taking up the microphone.

Maybe there are other ways to be loud that have nothing to do with speaking.

What I wore wasn’t random. Every piece had a story, a reason, and a purpose. It told a story before I said a word — and maybe that’s another way to be loud.

What helps you stand out or invite conversation at big events, especially when you’re not the one on stage? Any ideas about why I wore the things I did?

Just because it's YOUR truth doesn't mean it's THEIR story to carry.

An audience can handle almost anything if they're primed to receive it.

Hardship, pain, trauma—all part of being human. AND there are a couple of questions one must ask before you share:

Is this helpful or hurtful? Is this about me or ultimately about them?

If it's hurtful and your ego wants the hit of the story? Work it out with your friends or your support group. Bring it up with your therapist to process. Don't put that on an audience.

🚩 The biggest red flag: "I've never told anyone this before..." followed by the most horrific thing. That's not courage. That's unprocessed pain looking for a place to land.

When you're platformed, you have a RESPONSIBILITY. Your story matters—but so does the container you create to hold it.

Speak with courage. Lead with clarity. Always, ALWAYS consider your audience's capacity to receive what you're about to share and always do so responsibly and deep care.

Which one are you? šŸ‘‡

When someone says "tell me about yourself":
Full LinkedIn bio mode (everyone's asleep)
Downplay everything (imposter syndrome activated)
Ramble through your entire timeline (hello, deposition vibes)

Here's the truth: "Tell me about yourself" is a terrible question. But it's THE question you'll face over and over as a speaker, leader, or changemaker.
And if your answer doesn't land? You just wasted your most important 60 seconds.

Let's fix that together. šŸ”„

I'm hosting FREE Public Speaking Office Hours THIS THURSDAY (May 7th, NOON ET) focused on crafting intros that actually sound like YOU—and make people lean in.

No webinar. No slides. No pitch-fest. Just live coaching, real community, and breakthroughs.

Bring your current intro. We'll transform it together.
